Ebeltoft [ ˈɛːbəltɔfd ] is a small Danish town with 7167 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020). It is located on the Jutland Djursland peninsula on the Ebeltoft Vig, a bay of the Kattegat , and belongs to the municipality of Syddjurs . The city lives on the one hand from its yacht and fishing port, on the other hand from tourism . This is due to the idyllic flair of the historic old town from the 14th century and the proximity to holiday home areas such as Ahl Strand, Øer Maritime Ferieby (a small marina with adjoining holiday apartments), Handrup, Lyngsbæk and Egsmark Strand as well as three large campsites in Krakær, Vibæk Strand and the nearby town of Dråby.
Attractions
The center of Ebeltoft consists largely of historic houses, the smallest town hall in the world, "Det Gamle Rådhus", with an old prison cellar and the Romanesque-early Gothic church determine the townscape, which has basically remained unchanged for centuries. Ebeltoft has experienced strong economic growth over the past 15 years and now has large department stores and a pedestrian zone. Ebeltoft is also the headquarters of the Danish-European textile design company Kvadrat (square). In addition to two comprehensive schools, the European film school in Denmark is also located in Ebeltoft.
In addition to the centuries-old historical monuments, Ebeltoft is represented in the region with two outstanding sights of national cultural importance. In addition to international exhibits, the numerous works by Ebeltoft glass artists are on display in the glass museum at the harbor. Glass blowing is a special feature of the city, which is why it is also known as the “capital of glass”. The historic frigate Jylland , the longest surviving ship of its kind, is located in the museum harbor . During the German-Danish War on May 9, 1864, the frigate took part in the naval battle off Heligoland , which despite a tactical success of the Danish fleet could not prevent the Prussian victory. It can now be viewed in Ebeltoft, completely restored and equipped with a crew of wax figures.

There are always activities organized for tourists and locals during the summer holidays. According to old tradition, night watchmen have been walking through the streets since 1950 and singing their watch songs. Since it is assumed that the name Ebeltoft can be traced back to the fact that when the city was built, a hill with apple trees formed the center of the same. Since 2004, the so-called " Ebelfestival "(apple festival) organized.
traffic
Ebeltoft is favored by its location near the European route 45 . From the city's ferry port there was a time-saving ferry connection to Sjællands Odde , the north-western tip of the island, at least in summer 2018 only the connection Aarhus - Sjællands Odde will be served. The Aarhus Airport (Aarhus Lufthavn) in Tirstrup is about 15 minutes by car from Ebeltoft and opens up the city to the international air traffic . Originally the city had a connection to the railway network via the Ebeltoft – Trustrup railway line , which was shut down in 1968.
