Hannes Peter Stephensen

Hannes Peter Stephensen (also Steffensen ; born November 21, 1832 in Ebeltoft ; † March 22, 1908 in Frederiksberg ) was a Danish merchant , civil servant and inspector of Greenland .

Life

Stephensen began his career as an assistant at Den Kongelige Grønlandske Handel (KGH). In 1870 he was appointed inspector of South Greenland . He held the office until 1882. When he was twelve years in office he was the third longest inspector in South Greenland after Marcus Nissen Myhlenphort (19 years) and Carl Peter Holbøll (28 years). In 1883 he was appointed account manager and finally in 1890 director of the trading company, which he was until 1902. He was still a budget councilor and holder of the Dannebrog Order . Hannes Peter Stephensen was the son of emigrants to Denmark Icelander Olaf Stephani Stephensen (actually Ólafur Stefánsson ; 1791-1854) and the Danish Birgitte Christine Petersen Windt (1803-1839). His father was himself the son of an Icelandic man and a woman who had emigrated to Iceland with a Danish father and a Norwegian mother. He was not married, but had an illegitimate daughter, 19-year-old Caroline Hjølund (1850-1925), who was 18 years his junior. She was born on May 28, 1870 and was named Petra Johannes Carolina Steffansen and died in 1928. His family held important posts in both Iceland and Denmark. His nephew Regnar Stephensen was later also an inspector of South Greenland. His brother Westy Oddgeir Hilmar Stephensen was director of the Danish National Bank . His great-nephews were the architects Hakon Stephensen and Magnus Stephensen .
