Claus Bendeke (born February 3, 1763 in Vang , † May 29, 1828 in Kristiansand ) was a Norwegian lawyer , civil servant and inspector of Greenland .

Life

Claus Bendeke was first taught by private tutors at home and after the death of his father studied at the school in Helsingør and then studied law in Copenhagen until 1788 . He then worked in administrative offices in Copenhagen. In 1795 he was appointed inspector of South Greenland and then moved to North Greenland in 1796 , u. a. because he was better paid there before he returned to Norway in 1801 for health reasons, as he could not stand the cold climate and suffered from scurvy . Officially he was in office until 1803, Peter Hanning Motzfeldt represented him and then he took over the office for the following 14 years. During his tenure, he created the first banknotes in Greenland, which he printed on the back of playing cards . He was well-disposed towards the Greenlanders and, to the annoyance of the colonialists from Denmark-Norway , said that Greenland only belonged to the Greenlanders and that the Europeans were only guests. When he was released from office in 1803, he was appointed chamber councilor. From 1804 to 1816 he was governor of the Hedmark . He was charged for his misconduct because Friedrich von Hessen-Kassel , who was governor in Norway at the time, was dissatisfied with him, but the trial never took place, because in 1814 he was a member of the Grunnlovsforsamlingen for the Selvstendighetspartiet , where the Constitution of Eidsvoll was decided. The voting rules that were in effect until 1884 go back to Bendeke's idea. From 1815 to 1816 he was a deputy in Storting . In 1816 he was appointed assessor at the court in Kristiansand, but was only able to take up office the following year due to persistent illnesses. In 1823 he was appointed legal advisor at the court before he died on May 29, 1828 in Kristiansand.
