Carl Julius Peter Ryberg (born December 4, 1854 in Copenhagen , † October 4, 1929 in Charlottenlund ) was a Danish merchant , civil servant and inspector of Greenland .

Life

After finishing school, Ryberg began volunteering at Den Kongelige Grønlandske Handel (KGH) in Copenhagen in 1873 . Two years later he was sent to Greenland as an assistant, where he worked in Paamiut . In 1879 he moved to Qaqortoq and in 1881 to Nanortalik and in 1883 back again. In 1884 he was appointed inspector for South Greenland . He held the office with great enthusiasm for six years before he was replaced by Johan Carl Joensen in 1890 . In 1891 he was appointed clerk at KGH. In the same year he published a Danish-Greenlandic phrasebook, which should simplify the work of the Danes in Greenland. In 1902 he was promoted and was from then on director of the trading company. His tenure was fraught with problems due to his conservative stance - he received criticism in particular from Greenlandford's Ludvig Mylius-Erichsen - which led to the director's office being separated in 1908 and trade and administration now being independent of each other, which meant that Ryberg was in charge trade was denied. A committee investigated the matter and concluded that no mistakes had been made, so the decision was reversed and Ryberg remained director until 1912. Ryberg was a knight of the Dannebrog Order and continued to work as a conference councilor from 1912 .

He was the son of Johan (nes) Peter Ryberg (1802–1876) and his second wife Anna Cathrine Smith (1819–1881). He married in 1883 in Qaqortoq Malvina Wilhelmine Lovise Guldberg (1851-1904) and after her death in 1905 in Tårbæk Inge Papenhausen Willerup (1872-1926). On October 26, 1884 their son Hugo was born in Nuuk and their daughter Ingrid on June 2, 1886.
