Sophus Theodor Krarup-Smith , actually Sophus Theodor Krarup Smith (born February 8, 1834 in Holstebro , † May 28, 1882 in Qeqertarsuaq ) was a Danish mineralogist , geologist , teacher and inspector of Greenland .

Life

Sophus Theodor Krarup-Smith attended school in Viborg and graduated in 1850. Thereupon he began to study science, which he finished in 1857 with the exam. He then became assistant to the state director of hydraulic engineering and the Ministry of the Interior before moving to the mineralogical university museum, where he began to be interested in Greenland, as there he received the collections of Johann Georg Forchhammer and Carl Ludwig Giesecke . In addition, the then Interior Minister Orla Lehmann had a strong influence on him. The chemist Julius Thomsen also introduced him to the cryolite discovered in Greenland . In 1861 he was paid by the Ministry of the Interior to go on an expedition to Greenland. For this he traveled to Ivittuut , where the mineral was found. He worked with Thomsen on the planning of the mining industry, which proved so difficult economically that he left Greenland again in 1863. He then became a teacher at Næsgaard , Denmark's oldest agricultural school on Falster . In 1866, after twenty years, Christian Søren Marcus Olrik offered him his inspectorate for North Greenland , which he took over in 1867 from the interim inspector Carl August Ferdinand Bolbroe . Shortly after taking office, he was visited by the mountaineer Edward Whymper and even after that he was a constant contact for many different scientists, such as George Nares , Allen Young or Isaac Israel Hayes . He was considered extremely friendly and unselfish. For his office he was awarded the Swedish Wasa Order. During his time as an inspector he continued to collect everything he could find and in 1871 also had the Greenland Ice Sheet explored, but not as far as the group only reached a distance of eight miles from Qasigiannguit , but still brought new knowledge. In 1882 he became seriously ill and died a month later while he was still in office. Hjalmar Christian Reinholdt Knuthsen was his successor for one year.

family

Sophus Theodor Krarup was a son of Troels Smith (1794–1873) and Sophie Dorothea Krarup (1800–1834). He is distantly related to Carl Emil Krarup , since Sophus' great-grandfather was also Carl's great-great-grandfather, but also an ancestor of Ole Krarup . He was married to Johanne Margrethe Lundsteen (1841-1916), who was the sister of Hansine Lundsteen, the wife of the later South Greenland inspector Edgar Christian Fencker .
