Christian Søren Marcus Olrik (born October 13, 1815 in Qaqortoq , † December 14, 1870 in Frederiksberg ) was a Danish - Greenlandic teacher , zoologist , botanist , merchant and inspector of Greenland.

Life

In 1833 Olrik graduated from the Copenhagen Civic School , after which he became a teacher in the Danish capital. In 1846 he was appointed inspector of North Greenland . Olrik didn't have any administrative, law, or business experience, but because of his relatives, he probably had a bonus. He held the office for 20 years, traveling through his inspectorate in both summer and winter. He was considered energetic and efficient, respected and valued. He was a member of the Greenland Trade Commission, founded in 1863, and advocated the self-sufficiency of the Greenland economy. He was a popular contact person for scientific expeditions in Greenland. His interest in zoology and botany resulted in a plant collection that contained many plants from Disko Island . After his release in 1866 he became a high-ranking official at Den Kongelige Grønlandske Handel and in 1869 the first director. He was also a member of various foreign societies and in 1860 a judicial councilor .

Honors

An island in Nunavut , Canada was named in his honor, but today this island is named Otrick Island , which could have been due to a transcription error . The following animal species also bear Olrik's name:

family

He was the son of the merchant and distiller Vilhelm Mathias Olrik (1780-1833) and Lea Kirstine Geraae (1794-1828). His mother was the granddaughter of Anders Olsen (1718–1786), who founded a large number of towns and cities in Greenland, and half of them were Greenlanders, since the wives of their two grandfathers were Inuit. He married Sophie Agnes Møller (1820–1862) in Helsingør in 1846 , had six children with her and after her death married her sister Margrethe Elisabeth (1812–1902). Both were sisters of the inspector Hans Peter Christian Møller (1810-1845), who had administered the colony of North Greenland until his death and was Olrik's predecessor. Olrik's father's cousin was Bendt Olrik , who was the first inspector for South Greenland from 1782 to 1789.
