Panzerroppen (Agonidae) are small bony fish (Osteichthyes). They live in the coastal zones of the Arctic , the North Atlantic , the North Pacific and southern South America to depths of 1,000 meters.

features

They have a body armored with bone plates, in most cases elongated, and a maximum of 30 centimeters long. The fish have at least one, but mostly two short dorsal fins, the first with 2 to 21 hard rays, the second with 4 to 14 soft fin rays. The anal fin has 4 to 28 rays, the stunted pelvic fins one hard and two soft fin rays, the caudal fin ten to twelve. The ventral fins are throaty. A swim bladder is missing. Panzer groups have 34 to 47 vertebrae. The number of Branchiostegal rays is five to six. The scales of the larvae and pelagic fry are formed as spines. One can prove the animals fossil since the lower Eocene .

The most well-known and native species of the rock pecker ( Agonus cataphractus ) from the North and Baltic Seas belong to the armored clusters .

Systematics

The Panzergroppen are divided into eight subfamilies 25 genera and almost 60 species .
