The Bathyagoninae are a subfamily of marine fish from the family of armored lizards (Agonidae). Eight of the nine species of Bathyagoninae occur in the eastern North Pacific, one ( Bathyagonus nigripinnis ) in the western North Pacific.

The species of Bathyagoninae are 9.5 to 24 cm long and have an elongated, in cross-section round or flattened body, which is covered with different sized bone plates of different shapes. The tip of the snout is protected by a large rostral plate with five thorns. The body plates are also usually thorny. The tips of the spines are transparent. In front of the first dorsal fin and between the two dorsal fins there are relatively many plates on the sides of the body. The fin rays on the edge of the caudal fin are covered by bone plates with sharp spines. An epuralia, an elongated, free-standing bone in the caudal fin skeleton, is present.
