Hemilepidotus is a genus of fish from the family of the armored slugs (Agonidae). The species of the genus occur close to the coast in the northern Pacific from Hokkaidō (Japan) over the Sea of Okhotsk , Kamchatka , the Bering Sea , the Aleutian Islands to southern California . They live from the intertidal zone to depths of around 600 meters. In English the fish are called "Irish Lords".

features

Hemilepidotus species are brawny, large-headed fish that reach a length of 26 to 51 cm. The spiny-rayed and soft-rayed dorsal fins, which are separate in the other bullhead genera, have grown together in Hemilepidotus . The prickly part of the dorsal fin rises in stages between the third and fourth, sometimes between the fourth and fifth spines. The scales of the fish consist of a wide, multi-row scale band on both sides of the dorsal fin, as well as a wide scale zone below the sideline . The spines of the gill cover are simple, with only one point.

Fin formula: dorsal X-XIII / 18-23, anal 0 / 13-19, ventral 4.
