Peter Martin Orla Lehmann (born May 15, 1810 in Copenhagen ; † September 13, 1870 ibid) was a Danish lawyer and politician ( De Nationalliberale ).

Life

Orla Lehmann was the son of the Holstein conference councilor Martin Christian Gottlieb Lehmann (1775-1856) from Haselau near Uetersen . The parents were German, but Orla grew up in a Danish environment. Friends of the family were u. a. Adam Oehlenschläger (1779–1850), Hans Christian Ørsted (1777–1851), Anders Sandøe Ørsted (1778–1860) and later Jens Immanuel Baggesen (1764–1826).

In 1833 Lehmann passed his legal exam (cand. Jur.) And in 1839 was a co-founder of the national liberal daily Fædrelandet . In 1842 he was sentenced to three months in prison as a publicist after criticizing absolutism .

In the 1840s, Lehmann was one of the leaders in efforts to combine the liberal movement with his oath policy and the interests of the peasants. In 1846 he was a co-founder of the Bondevennernes Selskab ("Society of Farmers' Friends"). Lehmann was also a pioneer of Scandinavianism .

During the March Revolution in Denmark in 1848, Lehmann played a prominent role in the abolition of absolutism and the establishment of a constitutional monarchy . In the “ March Ministry ” he was a minister without portfolio from March to November 1848.

Lehmann played an important role in the creation of the Danish Basic Law of 1849 by revising DG Monrad's draft linguistically and legally.

From 1851 to 1853 Lehmann was a member of the Folketing and from 1854 to 1870 of the Landsting . From 1861 to 1863 he was the Minister of the Interior of Denmark and as such worked out large parts of the November constitution of 1863, which was to trigger the German-Danish War of 1864 .

Orla Lehmann died at the age of 60 and found his final resting place on Holmens Kirkegård in his hometown.
