Hother Ostermann

Hother Bertel Simon Ostermann (born June 12, 1876 in Nørre Årslev , Sønderhald Herred , Randers office ; † June 28, 1950 in Greve , Tune Herred , København office ) was a Danish pastor , missionary , teacher , historian , genealogist , writer and translator .

Life

After graduating from school, Hother Ostermann worked in a pharmacy from 1892 to 1894 before completing private studies in 1896. He then worked as a private tutor in Veksø and became a candidate for theology in 1901. His childhood friends Knud Rasmussen and his cousin Frederik Balle aroused Ostermann's interest in Greenland . From then on he worked as a pastor and missionary in Ilulissat . In 1903 he was appointed teacher seminar leader. The following year he moved to Aasiaat , where he was pastor and from 1906 in Nuuk , where he was also a teacher at Grønland's seminary . After only one year he returned to his old place of work in Ilulissat and took up his position as pastor and seminar leader. He did not return to Denmark until 1921 and was finally pastor at Greve Sogn until 1946 before he retired.

Hother Ostermann worked for years to search Greenlandic church records and to record the families of the country in biographical and genealogical books. Other works dealt with the missionary history of the Europeans in Greenland. He also translates the psalms and Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tales into Greenlandic .

Hother was the son of the businessman Christian Andreas Leopold Ostermann (1854-1912) and his wife Bertha Franziska Augusta Marie Gjølbye (1856-1940). On June 11, 1901, he married in Valby Marie Kirstine "Dina" Andersen (1878-1945), the daughter of Jens Andersen (1837-1880) and Caroline Pedersen (1848-1886) from Hårby . His second great-uncle was the pastor Osvald Vilhelm Bøggild (1839–1920). The following children were born from his marriage:
