The Danish Girl is a US-American - British biopic from the year 2015 . Directed by Tom Hooper , the script was written by Lucinda Coxon . The film drama is based on the novel of the same name by the American author David Ebershoff about the intersex painter Lili Elbe , who underwent gender reassignment surgery. The film premiered on September 5, 2015 at the Venice International Film Festival , was released in US cinemas on November 27, 2015 and in German cinemas on January 7, 2016.

action

The Danish painter Gerda Wegener , who is mentioned in the German-language novel Greta , led an eventful artistic life in Copenhagen with her husband, the Danish landscape painter and illustrator Einar Wegener in the early twenties of the twentieth century . One day he steps in as a female model because Gerda's model is prevented. When she portrays Einar, he takes a liking to the fine material and rediscovers his long-hidden feminine side. The name Lili is jokingly given to him by Anna, the couple's friend, when she surprises them while creating the portrait.

The painted picture became famous, and so Gerda drew more portraits of her disguised husband. Little does Gerda suspect that her husband is increasingly developing sympathy for his feminine side. A role play develops from the original disguise that Einar never lets go. On social occasions he tries to mingle with the people in his new role without being recognized, and on these occasions he studies the behavior and body language of other women, which he can soon imitate perfectly. More and more often he shows himself disguised as a woman in public, until he realizes that he finally wants to live in a woman's body, and he decides to undergo gender reassignment surgery so that he can be Lili forever. The procedure is almost untested and extremely risky, but Lili dares to take the step and in the early 1930s becomes one of the first transsexuals to undergo such an operation.

Historical background

Real people and literary source

Lili Elbe , 1926

The first work, The Danish Girl by David Ebershoff , on which the film is based, was published in 2000 and in 2002 became a bestseller. Lili Elbe was one of the first transsexual who underwent in Germany in the early 1930s a gender reassignment surgery, first at the Institute of Sexology of Magnus Hirschfeld in Berlin and then twice more by Kurt Warnekros in Dresden. The novel is based on Lili Elbe's life story Fra mand til kvinde , which first appeared in Danish in 1931 and was later translated into German. For his novel, Ebershoff had Wegener's wife become the American painter Greta Waud. The real partner was born as Gerda Gottlieb and was Danish.

Deviations from the book

In contrast to the book, where Gerda and Lili split up, Gerda stays at Lili's side until the end. The fact that the marriage was annulled by the Danish king is also not mentioned in the film. The film also leaves out Gerda's move to Morocco and lesbian relationships.

Soundtrack

The original soundtrack was released by Decca Records on December 4th, 2015 and contains the score for Alexandre Desplat . It consists of 20 songs and the total length is 59:06 minutes. Desplat was nominated for his work in both the Satellite Awards 2015 and the Golden Globe Awards 2016 in the category of best film music .

reception

Age rating

In Germany the film is FSK 6 . The statement of reasons for the release states: “Some scenes that depict the severity of discrimination in society at that time can emotionally overwhelm preschoolers, but even 6-year-olds are able to process them in the context of the careful staging. Not all aspects of the story are revealed to them, but the many quiet passages and the emphasis on the loving relationship between the painter couple gives them sufficient emotional support. "

Reviews

In a review by Hessischer Rundfunk : With 'The Danish Girl', Tom Hooper is the first transsexual woman to set a worthy memorial to the historical figure Lili Elbe. It is a touching story about acceptance and tolerance and the insight into how tolerant our western society has become. Despite great attention to detail and the efforts of everyone involved to draw a sensitive portrait of Lili Elbe, Daniel Kothenschulte from the Frankfurter Rundschau criticizes Hooper for having strayed too far from the historical facts: the director renounces everything in his film could hurt a story like that. Here Kothenschulte refers to Einar's possible self-doubts or the terrifyingly primitive operational possibilities of the time.
