AACTA International Awards 2016

The 5th edition of the Australian AACTA International Awards , presented annually by the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (AACTA), a non-profit organization founded by the Australian Film Institute in August 2011 , took place on January 29, 2016 in Los Angeles instead. They honored the best films of 2015 outside Australia and are thus the counterpart to the regular AACTA Awards for Australian films on November 30th and December 9th, 2015. The award ceremony was shown for the third time on the Australian cable broadcaster Arena on January 31, 2016 .

Overview

The nominations were announced on January 5, 2016. There are no changes compared to the award from last year. With five nominations, the film drama Carol received the most mentions, followed by The Big Short with four. Mad Max also received several nominations : Fury Road , The Martian - Saving Mark Watney , The Revenant - The Returnees , Steve Jobs (3 each). The Danish Girl , Sicario and Spotlight (2 each).

Carol and Mad Max: Fury Road won two awards each. The drama won the best leading and supporting actresses, while the end-time film was recognized for best film and best director. Cate Blanchett won her second AACTA International Award for Best Female Leading Role after 2014 . Best script went to Tom McCarthy and Josh Singer for the biopic Spotlight . Leonardo DiCaprio was honored as best leading actor for The Revenant and Mark Rylance as best supporting actor for Bridge of Spies - The Negotiator .
