action

Joy Newsome, 24, lives with her 5-year-old son Jack in a nine-square-meter shed they call room . It includes a bed, a toilet, a bathtub, a small table with chairs and a rudimentary kitchen. The only window is a skylight. A man they both call Old Nick and who is Jack's biological father kidnapped Joy seven years ago and has kept her captive in the shed ever since. Old Nick visits the room regularly to bring groceries and routinely rape Joy while Jack sleeps in the closet. Jack is a lively boy who celebrates his 5th birthday at the beginning of the film. Although Joy suffers from malnutrition from the meager food and from depression from her hopeless situation , she is optimistic about Jack and makes him believe that only space is real and the rest of the world only exists on television.

One day Old Nick reveals that he lost his job some time ago and that he may no longer be able to provide for them. Joy decides to escape with Jack's help. She has Jack simulate a cold with a fever and hopes Old Nick will drive her to a hospital, but he brings medicine over instead. Joy then teaches her son to pretend to be dead, wraps him in the carpet and, in a feigned nervous breakdown, tells Old Nick to get Jack out of the room and take him to "where there are trees". Old Nick falls for this ruse, packs the carpet with Jack on the back of his pickup truck and drives off. When he stops at a stop sign, Jack jumps from the loading area and can draw the attention of a passer-by. Old Nick then flees and leaves Jack behind. Based on Jack's memory of the stopovers during the journey and satellite images, the police can locate the property with the shed and free Joy. She and Jack experience an emotional reunion with Joy's parents. The news later reported that Old Nick could be arrested.

Jack and Joy spend a short time in the hospital and then move in with Joy's mother and her new partner Leo. The relationship with her father experiences an emotional low point because he does not recognize his grandchildren, who emerged from a rape. It becomes apparent that for Jack, who never knew anything but space , the transition to life in the outside world will be very difficult. Initially, he only speaks to his mother and expresses a desire to return to the room . Joy is sad and upset about the seven years of imprisonment. In an argument, she hurts her mother's feelings by accusing her of leading a normal life in contrast to herself.

Over time, Joy becomes more and more depressed. Nevertheless, she agrees to a proposal from her lawyer for a television interview. When the interviewer questions her decision to keep Jack captive after he is born instead of asking Old Nick to put him in front of a hospital and thereby free him, she is overwhelmed by guilt and tries to commit suicide . She is then taken back to the hospital; Jack stays with his grandmother and Leo. While Joy is away, Jack meets Leo's dog, decides to have his first haircut and plays with a boy from the neighborhood who is the same age. In addition, he is now developing a closer relationship with his family. When Joy finally returns from the hospital, Jack wants to visit room with her one last time . Once there, he explains that the room has shrunk and that with the door open is not what he remembers. Before they both leave the shed, they say goodbye to the room .
