Das Königsspiel - A master is born (original title: Searching for Bobby Fischer , German Bobby Fischer sucht ) is an American drama from 1993 and the directorial debut of Steven Zaillian . The film, based on the book Searching for Bobby Fischer: The Father of a Prodigy Observes the World of Chess by Fred Waitzkin , was released in American theaters on August 11, 1993. In Germany it was released on June 20, 1994 directly on video cassette .
The film is about the chess prodigy Joshua Waitzkin , whose father Fred wrote the original book for the film.

Josh Waitzkin's family discovers he has a talent for chess and they try to encourage him to do it. With Bruce Pandolfini you hire a strict chess teacher who wants to teach the boy to be as aggressive as the chess legend Bobby Fischer . The title of the film is a metaphor for the protagonist's search for the ideal of Fischer and his determination to win at any price. Josh is also heavily influenced by Vinnie, a rapid chess crook he meets in Washington Square Park . The two teachers differ greatly in their approach to chess, so Pandolfini is upset when Josh repeats Vinnie's methods. The main conflict in the film arises when Josh refuses to accept Pandolfini's misanthropic worldview. Josh ends up winning in his own way.

The film was nominated for an Oscar in the category “ Best Cinematography ” at the 66th Academy Awards.

The King's Game received generally positive reviews from critics. On Rotten Tomatoes , the movie has a 100% rating based on 38 reviews, with an average rating of 8.2 / 10.
Roger Ebert gave the film four stars out of four and described it as "a film of remarkable sensitivity and insight". He concluded: "By the end of the film we learned a lot about human nature".
