action

The trapper Hugh Glass and his son Hawk, whose mother was a Pawnee , moved around 1823 on an expedition of the Rocky Mountain Fur Company through what is now the states of North Dakota and South Dakota . When a group of Arikaree Indians attacked the expedition, the men had to flee with heavy losses and leave behind many of their captured furs . Just under a third of the men can save themselves on their boat and flee downstream.

Since the trappers suspect that the Indians are chasing them along the bank, they leave the boat shortly afterwards, on the advice of Glass, to make their way overland to the nearest fort . While on a scouting expedition, Glass gets between a grizzly bear and her cub and is attacked. Although he is very seriously injured in the fight, he can kill the animal with his knife. His companions find Glass under the dead animal and first try to transport him back to the fort, but soon give up in the onset of winter. Hawk manages to dissuade the group leader, Captain Andrew Henry , from giving his father the coup de grace . Henry offers money to those men who stay with Glass until he dies and then bury him. Hawk and the young Jim Bridger immediately accept and waive their shares, whereupon former soldier John Fitzgerald also reports to collect the other two's shares. Fitzgerald doesn't believe that Glass has a chance of survival and instead sees him as a threat to her own survival. When the loyal Bridger leaves the campsite to fish, Fitzgerald ties the helpless Glass to his stretcher and tries to suffocate him. Hawk intervenes and is stabbed by Fitzgerald in front of his father. Fitzgerald told Bridger that Hawk had disappeared and a troop of Arikaree was approaching upstream, so they had to flee immediately and leave Glass behind. Although he is still alive, Fitzgerald pulls him into a recently dug grave and shovels earth on him. Bridger struggles with his conscience to leave the injured Glass behind. Finally he gives in to Fitzgerald's urging and follows him; before that he puts his canteen on Glass's chest.

Contrary to expectations, Glass does not die, but digs his way out of the grave. When he finds his dead son, he decides to take revenge on the murderer and embarks on the long and hard journey through the snowy nature back to the fort. Because his leg is injured, he first has to crawl on the ground move forward. Cold and lack of food cause trouble for the weak. On the river bank he finds shelter in a cave for some time until the Arikaree discover him. Glass just manages to let himself be carried away by the current and thus escape. Close to death by cold, he drags himself out of the water. He manages to make a fire and catch fish.

Glass meets a Pawnee Indian named Hikuc, who is in a similar situation and takes him on his horse. Hikuc feeds him, tends him and builds a sweat lodge in an upcoming snowstorm , in which he treats Glass' wounds with herbs. In feverish dreams, Glass keeps seeing his son and his wife. When he left the hut the next morning, he discovered Hikuc hanging dead from a tree, with a sign in French around his neck: “We are all savages.” He found the Indian's horse not far from a camp of French trappers who were with him the Arikaree had previously exchanged the captured skins for weapons and horses. Previously, the French had kidnapped Powaqa, the daughter of Arikaree chief Elk Dog, imprisoned and raped, so that the Arikaree are now on the trail of the French. Glass causes a commotion and gallops off with Hikuc's horse. Because of the mess, he also enables Powaqa to escape.

Some time later, Glass is attacked by the Arikaree as they approach his resting place. He escapes on his horse, leaving the protective bearskin behind, and falls down a slope in the process. The horse dies, but Glass survives the deep fall a tall tree catches. He cuts open the body of the animal, removes the entrails and lays himself naked in the still warm body of the animal, in which he survives the oncoming snowstorm.

In the meantime, Fitzgerald and Bridger arrive at the fort, where they tell that Glass died and that they had buried him as agreed. A few days later one of the French trappers also arrives there. He reports that he lost all of his men in an attack by the Arikaree and asks for help. He has Bridger's canteen with him, which he left with Glass. Then Henry starts a nocturnal search with a troop of riders, because they suspect that Hawk is still alive. Instead, they find Glass. Henry rides back into the fort to arrest Fitzgerald, who has apparently lied about Glass's death. However, Fitzgerald has run away and looted the fort's cash register beforehand. In a rage, Henry almost shoots the confessing Bridger, but then decides to just lock him up.

Glass has his wounds tended and asks Henry for a horse and weapons to pursue Fitzgerald. Henry hesitates at first because Glass is too weak, but then decides to go with him. When they split up, Henry is shot and scalped by Fitzgerald . Glass loads the body onto his horse and rides both horses on. Fitzgerald lies in ambush nearby with his rifle and shoots the rider, who then falls from his horse. As Fitzgerald approaches, he realizes that Glass has propped Henry's corpse on the first horse with a branch and laid himself on the pack horse . Glass shoots Fitzgerald, but injures him only slightly, allowing him to flee. There is a duel with a knife and tomahawk near a river . Glass defeats Fitzgerald, but does not kill him when he reminds him that his "little bit of vengeance " will not bring his son back to him. Glass then leaves the seriously injured to the approaching Arikaree under the leadership of Elk Dog, who observed the scene. Among them is Powaqa, rescued by Glass. The Arikaree pull Fitzgerald out of the water and kill him, but spare Glass and ride past him without a word.

Then the injured Glass drags himself through the forest and has another vision of his deceased wife, who turns away from him and smiles for the first time.

production

History of origin

The Revenant is a film adaptation of the novel The Revenant: A Novel of Revenge by Michael Punke from the year 2002. The stories contained therein are inspired by real events in the lives of real personalities. Hugh Glass , John Fitzgerald, Andrew Henry, and Jim Bridger are historical figures. The trapper Hugh Glass was really attacked by a grizzly in 1823 and left to die by his comrades and struggled through the wilderness for several months to be able to return to civilization. Unlike the 1971 film A Man in the Wild , which is also based on the story of Hugh Glass, many characters in The Revenant bear the original names of the historical models.

Cast and dubbing

In April 2014, Iñárritu confirmed that work on the film had begun and that Leonardo DiCaprio had been cast in the lead role . Tom Hardy took on the role of his adversary, John Fitzgerald. In July 2014, it was revealed that Irish actor Domhnall Gleeson was playing the leader of the expedition, Captain Andrew Henry . Forrest Goodluck plays the son of Glass, the half-Indian Hawk . Will Poulter takes on the role of Jim Bridger . The Athabaskin Melaw Nakehk'o made her debut in the film as Powaqa, the daughter of the Arikaree chief.

The German dubbing was based on a dialogue book and dialogue direction by Marius Clarén on behalf of RC Production Kunze & Wunder GmbH & Co. KG.

Filming

Shooting began in October 2014. They took place mainly in the deep winter, snow-sure areas of Canada in the rural areas of Calgary and Burnaby . Parts of the film were also shot in the United States and the final scenes in Ushuaia , the southernmost city in Argentina. For the filming in the rough terrain, the production company New Regency hired experts for helicopter operations, mountaineering, bear behavior, whitewater and cold. The director was reproached for the strains associated with the shooting, but according to Iñárritu, they were necessary for the film to succeed. Many people involved in the film said after the shooting that the brutal cold had made their work the worst experience of their lives, including the main actor DiCaprio himself. In an interview with Focus magazine , the actor said: “Personally, I clinked innumerable times my physical and mental limit. ”Several team members are said to have stopped their work due to overexertion. For the final days of shooting, the film crew had to travel from Calgary to Ushuaia because the snowmelt in Canada was too advanced. The last film scenes were shot on the Olivia River in the Argentine city. Shooting ended in August 2015. The cost of producing the film was $ 135 million.

Performance and exploitation

The film premiered in selected US cinemas on December 25, 2015. An illegal copy of the film appeared on the Internet before it even opened in theaters.

The film including bonus material was released on Blu-ray and DVD on May 19, 2016 . On the same day, the film was also available on Sky Select, Sky Select HD and Sky Select on Sky On Demand .

reception

Age rating

In Germany, the film was approved by the FSK from the age of 16. The statement of reasons for the release states: “The film contains some bloody fighting and killing scenes (e.g. during an Indian attack) with partly clear depictions of violence. In doing so, however, the staging always takes the victim's position and thus arouses the viewer's sympathy; the violence does not have a disorienting or brutal effect on young people aged 16 and over. Revenge as a means of satisfaction is also questioned several times. "

Reviews

Director Alejandro G. Iñárritu , 2008

The film was able to convince 81 percent of the Rotten Tomatoes critics (out of a total of 222 critics, as of January 18, 2016). Walli Müller from NDR Info says: “With 'The Revenant', director Iñárritu has succeeded in creating a survival drama with a grandiose effect. The camera work lets the viewer physically feel the forces of nature. "Christian Horn from Filmstarts.de draws a similar conclusion :" [...] unspoiled scenes such as a flooded forest or a torrent [Emmanuel] Lubezki captures in half poetic, half realistic panoramas in which it uses the entire width of the scope screen. It's constantly snowing or raining, the unleashed elements advance even more to another protagonist than in Sydney Pollack's Jeremiah Johnson, for example . ”In addition, the acting skills of DiCaprio were emphasized in many cases, who in the film only has to fill out his role with a few words. Stern paid tribute to the protagonist's performance online : “DiCaprio acts far from sentimentality. He shows the grimace of evil without taking the face of the man he embodies by grossly grimacing or gesticulating, i.e. the individuality. "Thomas Hartmann from Deutschlandradio Kultur is impressed by the physical presence of the actor:" Leonardo DiCaprio delivers as Hugh Glass a breathtaking performance, torments, fights, freezes, crawls through the snowy landscape. [...] The nature photographs would be of a ravishing beauty - if you didn't know what a tragedy is going on here. "

Michael Meyns from programmkino.de judges, however, with regard to the true historical events: “In the end, 'The Revenant' leaves the ambivalent impression of a technically brilliant film that tries to hide its thin story with unconvincing references to the tragedy of the history of the Wild West . "Christian Witte from cereality.net comes to the conclusion:" Alejandro G. Iñárritu overwhelms on a technical level, less with dramatic passion. " Zeit Online sees similar weaknesses :" The testosterone excess that is generated here in the fight of the wild things is just as powerful as the basic message of the epic survival story remains manageable. ”Oliver Kaever from Spiegel Online also relates his criticism to the level of statements of the film and notes that the director and cameraman answered the question of being posed by the film with the depth of a photo wallpaper , however, describes the film as a spectacular "survival ripper".

Gross profit

After the film was only shown in selected US cinemas from December 25, 2015, it officially opened there on January 8, 2016. The film grossed 39.8 million US dollars in North American cinemas on the first weekend and landed at number 2 on the cinema charts. One month after its official release, the film grossed $ 327.2 million worldwide. In the meantime (as of May 5, 2016) the film grossed around 527 million US dollars. In Germany, over 2.8 million cinema-goers saw the film, making it the 8th most visited film of 2016. The film grossed 108 million dollars more at the box office than the most successful western to date, The Dances with Wolves .
