Domhnall Gleeson / ˈd̪ˠoːn̪ˠəl̪ˠ ˈgliːsn / (born May 12, 1983 in Dublin ) is an Irish actor , screenwriter and director .

Life and career

Gleeson was born in Dublin in 1983 , the eldest of four sons of actor Brendan Gleeson . His younger brother Brian is also active as an actor. Gleeson graduated from the Dublin Institute of Technology with a Bachelor of Arts in Media Arts . After graduating, he began working as a screenwriter and director for theater and film. In 2006 he appeared in the movie Studs with his father. Gleeson also appeared in the Oscar- winning short film Six Shooter and Boy Eats Girl and the RTÉ television series The Last Furlong . He also appeared on the Broadway show The Lieutenant of Inishmore at the age of 23 and was nominated for a Tony Award for his role .

He has appeared in various performances at the Dublin Gate Theater , including adaptations of American Buffalo and Great Expectations . The latter role has been described as "originally played" by Bruce Arnold, critic for the Irish Independent newspaper . In early 2007 he also had a role as Bobby in David Mamet's play American Buffalo , also at the Gate Theater.

Gleeson appeared on the one-time RTÉ comedy sketch show Your Bad Self , which aired on December 26, 2008. In 2008 he also had roles in A Dog Year and Paddyville .

In March 2009, his role as Bill Weasley in the films Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 was confirmed. His father Brendan plays the role of Alastor Moody in the films . Gleeson was initially reluctant to be on camera with his father in the same movie, but later changed his mind. In 2009 he said of his role: “I was sure I wouldn't take this role because of my father. I thought I always got that father-son feeling of 'He got you the part.' He was also seen at the side of his father in the films Bounty - Perrier's Bounty , which came out in 2009, and On Sunday You're Dead (2014).

In the 2010 film Sensation , Gleeson played the role of a lustful young farmer whose “heartless encounter” with a call girl “turned into a bittersweet love story”. In 2013 he took on one of the lead roles in Richard Curtis ' romantic time travel comedy Everything a Question of Time .

In 2015 he played the role of General Hux in Star Wars: The Force Awakens . In 2017 he played in the Star Wars sequel Star Wars: The Last Jedi and in the thriller Mother! With. In the last part of the Star Wars saga, which appeared in 2019, he again took on the role of General Hux.

In 2017 he was accepted into the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), which awards the Oscars every year.

Gleeson does not currently have a permanent voice actor. It is mostly spoken by Nico Sablik or Sebastian Schulz .
