True Grit ( English for "real cutting") is an American late-western from 2010 . Directed by Ethan and Joel Coen , who are also responsible for the script. It is the second film adaptation of the novel of the same name by Charles Portis from 1968. In the first film, which was released in 1969 and has the German title Der Marshal , John Wayne played the role of Rooster Cogburn.

The film opened the 61st Berlin International Film Festival in 2011 and was shown in German cinemas on February 24, 2011.

After The Big Lebowski , True Grit is the second collaboration between the Coen brothers and Jeff Bridges .

action

14-year-old Mattie Ross came to Fort Smith , Arkansas , in 1878 to collect the body of her murdered father. She has set out to avenge her father's murder. Since she doesn't get any help from the authorities, she wants to hunt down the murderer Tom Chaney, who fled to Indian territory and probably joined a gang of gangsters. She hires the alcoholic, unpredictable Marshal Reuben "Rooster" Cogburn. Cogburn wants to go alone, but Mattie convinces him to go hunting Chaney together. They are joined by the Texas ranger LaBoeuf, who wants to collect the bounty on Chaney for his murder of a senator . At first, Cogburn and LaBoeuf try to shake the girl off, but Mattie catches up with them.

During the trip together, there were repeated arguments between Cogburn and LaBoeuf. The precocious Mattie tries diplomatically to ensure peace. Cogburn gets drunk and becomes increasingly intolerable.

After Cogburn and LaBoeuf have already given up the hunt and LaBoeuf has said goodbye after another argument, Mattie Ross and Chaney duel in a river. Mattie can wound Chaney, but her revolver fails and Chaney overpowers her and he and his cronies drag her up a mountain. In the further course there is a showdown between Rooster Cogburn and Chaney's cronies, who left him with Mattie on the plain at the foot of this mountain. As soon as Chaney is alone with Mattie, he pushes her to the ground and puts his knife to her throat, but is overwhelmed by LaBoeuf, who has since returned.

LaBoeuf and Mattie watch the duel on the plains from the mountain and LaBoeuf saves Cogburn's life with a shot over a distance of four hundred yards (about 365 meters). Meanwhile, Chaney has regained consciousness and knocks LaBoeuf down with a stone, but Mattie manages to grab LaBoeuf's rifle and shoot Chaney. Due to the recoil, she falls into a crevice and is bitten in the hand by a poisonous snake, but can be rescued from the crevice by Cogburn and LaBoeuf. In a long night, Cogburn tries to take Mattie, who is struggling with death, to a doctor. When Mattie's horse collapses exhausted, he carries her in his arms to a lonely settlement hut.

The film starts again 25 years later. Mattie says that Cogburn stayed with her until she was out of danger, but disappeared when she regained consciousness. Her life was saved at the time, but her left arm had to be amputated because the snake bite caused gangrene . She goes to a western show that Cogburn works for and that he told her about in a letter. When she arrives there, Mattie is informed that Cogburn had died in Arkansas three days earlier. Mattie then has Cogburn's body transferred to her hometown and buried there and visits Cogburn's grave regularly. She hasn't heard from LaBoeuf since the incidents 25 years ago.

background

Pre-production

15,000 girls were cast for the role of the young Mattie Ross. The role was eventually given to Hailee Steinfeld . At the time of casting and filming, she was 13 years old. True Grit is Steinfeld's film debut in a feature film.

Michael Biehn auditioned for the role of "Lucky" Ned Pepper, but Barry Pepper received it.

Josh Brolin got the role of Tom Chaney while Jeff Bridges played the lead role of Rooster Cogburn. Both actors previously played the character of Wild Bill Hickok in the films Wild Bill and The Young Riders . In the first film adaptation of The Marshal of the underlying novel by Charles Portis from 1968, John Wayne played the role of Rooster Cogburn and wore an eye patch over his left eye. In True Grit , Jeff Bridges wears the blindfold over his right eye in the role of Cogburn. In the novel, Rooster Cogburn is around 40 years old. Both John Wayne, aged 62, and Jeff Bridges, aged 60, were significantly older when they were offered the roles in the novel.

Filming

True Grit was filmed in New Mexico and Texas in the spring of 2010 , including Austin , Blanco and Granger . The exterior shots of the scenes from Fort Smith were made in the Texas town of Granger . The old brick buildings, in the style of the time after the American Civil War , were supplemented with additional backdrops. Among other things, the modern post office was hidden behind wooden facades, but remained in operation during the shooting. The paved road was covered with tamped clay. An original historical train from that time was able to travel over the railway line running through the town. Since the film is set in winter, the leaves from all the trees in the picture were hand-picked.

Because Hailee Steinfeld was a minor at the time of filming, filming with her after midnight was not allowed. This was problematic in that the film contains various night shots. Due to Steinfeld's limited working hours and other overlaps in the shooting schedule, Steinfeld was replaced by an adult double in many scenes that were filmed over her shoulder .

When LaBoeuf and Mattie first met, the Texas ranger told her that the killer of her father she was looking for was using the name J. Todd Anderson in addition to Chaney. Anderson is a storyboard artist who is often involved in Coen productions .

In order to sound as authentic as possible in the scene in which LaBoeuf almost bit off his tongue after a fight, Matt Damon had his tongue wrapped with a fine thread.

Specially trained animals were used for film scenes in which horses fell according to the script or suffered stress or pain, or the desired effects were achieved by technical post-processing of the recordings.

Elizabeth Marvel played the role of the adult Mattie Ross. In the scenes where she can be seen losing her left forearm after the snakebite, Marvel was replaced by her double Ruth Morris. Morris was born with no left forearm. In the released version of the film, Morris can be seen longer than Marvel, which she doubles.

As in the novel, certain weapons and their special properties play a partially prominent role in the film. Mattie's father leaves a heavy old Colt Dragoon for his daughter . Rooster Cogburn uses a cavalry model of the Colt Single Action Army and a Winchester Model 1873 . It is noticeable that the rifle is used much less prominently in accordance with the novel than in the 1968 film adaptation. In addition, as in the novel, Cogburn mentions that he carries a pair of Colt Navy 1851 revolvers in holsters on his saddle, in fact it is However, the weapons used in the film are also Colt Dragoons. LaBoeuf uses a Colt Single Action Army as well as a Sharps 1874 cavalry carbine, the precision, range and strength of which are extensively praised several times in the LaBoeuf film, especially against Cogburn's Winchester. Tom Chaney carries an 1860 Henry Rifle , which he stole from Mattie's father and to which, as emphasized in the novel, he tied a rope as a makeshift shoulder strap. Ned Pepper uses a Remington 1875 revolver and a Winchester 1866 "Yellow Boy" .

According to the Coen brothers, True Grit is not a remake of the film of the same name starring John Wayne in the role of Marshal Cogburn. Rather, both see the film as a remake of the novel by Charles Portis . Many critics are of the opinion that the Coen brothers' film is much closer to the novel than the original film adaptation.

The film was largely received with great approval by the critics.

This is how Gregor Wossilus judged in his review for Bayerischer Rundfunk:

True Grit is certainly difficult cinema fare for some viewers. Difficult because the film does not always seem tangible in its basic message and narrative structure. But whether as a historical painting of the American West or an unusual story of revenge, Joel and Ethan Coen have made a thoroughly fascinating, entertaining and above all visually impressive film with True Grit . "

In his review, Thomas Groh mainly drew comparisons to the 1969 original with John Wayne, which Groh said was the more interesting film:

“Every picture, every dirty texture, every guttural sound from Jeff Bridges' unshaven throat is precisely performed and indulges in its own attention to detail. The massive landscapes - in the Wayne film still brought into the picture with the defiant insistence that the great time of the Western, contrary to all signs, is not over - remains mainly a foolish eye-catcher. In all of this, the new version of 'True Grit' is incredibly nice to look at and follow, but it is a much less interesting film. "

The critic of the film service also regretted that the Coens only delivered a remake with True Grit:

True Grit is a very entertaining genre film that is a pleasure to watch, with mostly short supporting roles (like those of Josh Brolin and Barry Pepper as villains). At the same time, you are a little annoyed that the screenwriters Joel and Ethan Coen did not feel like making up their own story this time. "

Metacritic had an average rating of 80% based on 41 reviews. The Rotten Tomatoes website has 96% positive reactions from 241 counted reviews so far.

Awards

Hailee Steinfeld has received several awards as a supporting and young actress (Indiana Film Journalists Association Award, Southeastern Film Critics Association Award, Toronto Film Critics Association Award , Las Vegas Film Critics Society Award, Broadcast Film Critics Association Award ). Roger Deakins' camerawork was also awarded ( Los Angeles Film Critics Association Award , National Society of Film Critics Award ).

True Grit could not win an Oscar despite ten nominations and is thus one of the most nominated films without an Oscar.
