Mary Zophres (* 23. March 1964 as Maria Zafeiropoulou in Fort Lauderdale , Florida ) is an American costume designer .

Life

In the late 1980s, Zophres began working as a costume designer for the film Born on July 4th . Some of the most famous films she has worked on include a. The Big Lebowski , Crazy About Mary , No Country for Old Man or Iron Man 2 . The collaboration with the brothers Ethan and Joel Coen , for whom she has already worked in more than ten films, was particularly intense .

In 2000 she received for O Brother, Where Art Thou? a nomination for best costume design at the Sierra Awards , followed in 2003 for Catch Me If You Can in the same category at the British Academy Film Awards . In 2009 she won the Saturn Award for Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull .

At the 2011 Academy Awards , Zophres was nominated for an Oscar in the Best Contemporary Design category for her work on True Grit . She was also nominated for this film at the BAFTA Awards , the Critic's Choice Award , the Sierra Awards and the PFCS Awards . She received other Oscar nominations for the film musical La La Land (2016) and the western The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (2018).
