occupation

Ladykillers is an American feature film from 2004. It belongs to the genre of heist movies and is also the remake of the film of the same name from 1955.

action

In order to clear the vault of the “New Orleans Riverboat Casino”, the self-proclaimed Professor Goldthwait Higginson Dorr lodges himself with the old, pious widow Munson as a tenant. His plan is to dig a tunnel to the casino with his four companions from the basement. So that the old lady doesn't become suspicious, the gang pretends to be a chamber orchestra that practices in the basement. In fact, the music is played from a tape recorder brought along while the crooks drive their break-in. The coup succeeds, the money falls into the hands of the crooks.

When they close the tunnel with a blast again, Mrs. Munson discovers the matter. She asks the gang to return the money and go to church on Sunday, otherwise they will inform the police. The criminals decide to kill Mrs. Munson. Gawain MacSam is killed in an argument with Garth Pancake over who should kill Mrs. Munson. Garth Pancake, in turn, is eliminated by the general when he tries to run away with the money and his girlfriend Mountain Girl. The general himself has an accident trying to get rid of Mrs. Munson. The bodies are always thrown from a bridge onto a ship that transports garbage.

While trying to stop Professor Dorr from killing Mrs. Munson himself, the mentally limited scoundrel Hudson accidentally shoots himself on the bridge and ends up on the garbage truck. When Professor Dorr is already happy to be able to dispose of the money on his own, part of a bridge sculpture falls on his head and he also falls dead on the ship. With no criminal left but the money still there, Mrs. Munson goes to the police. Sheriff Wyner and the Deputy Sheriff are still solving the crime and don't want to believe Mrs. Munson because they consider her senile. To get rid of her, tell her to keep the money. She is donating it to Bob Jones University , a Bible school in Greenville, South Carolina .

background

As in the original film adaptation, the Boccherini minuet , a pure string quintet , is used as "playback music" for the simulated rehearsal . The crooks, however - apart from a violin as the only string instrument - approach with more or less exotic musical instruments: a theorbo , a trombone , a parforce horn and a three-necked guitar , which is held by the general between his knees like a cello, when Mrs. Munson checks that everything is in order. The professor poses as a lover of Renaissance music .

During the course of the film, the portrait of Mrs. Munson's deceased husband can be seen several times with different facial expressions appropriate to the respective situation.

Reviews

“The film, borne by wit and clever citations, transfers the nostalgic charm of the original into the present day and entertains with masterful lightness in terms of staging,” said the lexicon of international films . Prisma criticized the fact that the Coen brothers "moved the story set in post-war London to the southern United States today". Also, "only a few gags would work because some of the characters were completely overdrawn". Although lead actor Tom Hanks could convince, "everyone who knows the original will be immensely disappointed".

Awards

The film ran at the Cannes Film Festival in 2004 in official competition. Irma P. Hall received the jury award for her acting performance. She was also honored with other prizes, including the Black Reel Award in the musical / comedy category and the Saturn Award for best supporting actress . The German Film and Media Assessment FBW in Wiesbaden awarded the film the title “Particularly valuable”.
