The aging and dying Primo Sparazza, the last remaining godfather of a Cosa Nostra clan in the United States, is under surveillance by FBI agents Richard Messner and Donald Carruthers, who are gathering evidence to bring the godfather to justice. During a telephone surveillance, they learn that the old mafia boss has hired professional killers to eliminate a disgraced former member of the mafia - the Las Vegas magician Buddy "Aces" Israel. During the argument about it, Messner pretends to leave the matter behind and closes himself in tears in the sickroom where Sparazza and Israel are lying. Messner pulls out the plugs of the life support machines to which the two are connected. He then puts his pistol, his magazine and his badge on the floor of the hospital room, as a visible sign of his retirement from the FBI service.
