Martin Henderson (born October 8, 1974 in Auckland , New Zealand ) is a New Zealand actor .

life and career

He began his acting career with roles in New Zealand film and television productions. From 1992 to 1995 he was part of the regular cast of the New Zealand soap opera Shortland Street . This was followed by roles in the Australian soap opera Home and Away and in the drama series Big Sky .

In 1997 he moved to the United States to pursue a career and trained as an actor at the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York City . Like many actors, he took part in numerous auditions until he finally celebrated his first major success in 2002 with the male lead in the horror film The Ring . In 2004 he took on one of the leading roles alongside Piper Perabo in the film drama The Perfect Couple . This was followed by leading roles in the films Hart am Limit , Liebe Indian and Little Fish . He also appeared in the music video for Britney Spears ' single Toxic . From 2015 to 2017 he played the role of cardiac surgeon Nathan Riggs in the television series Grey's Anatomy . Since 2019 he has played the bar owner and former marine Jack Sheridan in the Netflix series Virgin River .
