The series revolves around nurse and midwife Melinda Monroe ( Alexandra Breckenridge ) who left LA to work in Virgin River for local doctor Doc Mullins ( Tim Matheson ), who refuses to admit he needs help. Her first acquaintances are Mayor Hope McCrea ( Annette O'Toole ) and the bartender Jack Sheridan ( Martin Henderson ), with whom she soon becomes friends.

On September 27, 2018, Netflix announced the production of a first season with ten episodes. The series was produced by Reel World Management and Roma Roth.
