Annette O'Toole (born April 1, 1952 in Houston , Texas ) is an American actress and singer .

Life

Annette O'Toole is the daughter of William West Toole Jr and Dorothy Geraldine Niland. She started acting at a young age and made guest appearances on television series such as My Three Sons and Smoking Colts . She had her first major role in the film Just 48 Hours , in which she played the friend of Nick Nolte's character. Shortly thereafter, she was seen in Superman III - The Steel Lightning alongside Christopher Reeve as Lana Lang . In the television series Smallville , she played Clark Kent's mother, Martha Kent.

Annette O'Toole is married to the actor Michael McKean , with whom she has also written various film music pieces. They were nominated for the Academy Award of best song for the song A Kiss at the end of the Rainbow , which they wrote for A Mighty Wind . Together they took on the leading roles in the legal drama Screaming Injustice in 1998 . The two also made a guest appearance on the television series Law & Order as a wealthy couple accused of murder.
