Here on Earth is an American drama film directed by Mark Piznarski in 2000 .

Waitress Samantha Cavanaugh has had a longstanding relationship with Jasper Arnold. Arnold and Kelley Morse, who came from a wealthy family, organize a car race at the end of which one of the cars rams into Samantha's parents' gas station, causing the gas station to catch fire. The young men are sentenced to help rebuild. Kelley's father, an entrepreneur, brings his son into town and goes on a business trip lasting several weeks.
Kelley lives with Jasper's family. He gets to know Samantha Cavanaugh, who is thinking about studying, better. She falls in love with him and accompanies him on a weekend trip to his family home in Boston . There he tells her about his depressed mother who died by suicide . Samantha and Kelley sleep together. The next day, Kelley meets his father's new girlfriend. His father admonishes him not to lose sight of goals because of the relationship.
It turns out that Samantha has cancer. Arnold tells Kelley that he accepts the relationship, which is painful for him, because it makes Samantha happy. Kelley leaves town but returns later. The film ends with Samantha's solemn burial while Kelley gives a speech.
Reviews
Roger Ebert wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times on March 24, 2000 that the film was slipping into sentimentality. The characters are unusually understanding and ready to forgive. Ebert praised the portrayal of Leelee Sobieski.
