Joshua "Josh" Daniel Hartnett (born July 21, 1978 in Saint Paul , Minnesota ) is an American actor and film producer .

Hartnett grew up with his three younger siblings Jake, Joe and Jessica with his father Daniel and his stepmother Molly. He had to give up his favorite sport, American football , at the age of 16 after a serious knee injury, which took him to the theater , which he was involved in until he graduated from high school in 1996. After a short stay at the SUNY theater school in New York , he moved to Hollywood to try his luck there.

The then 18-year-old Hartnett made his television debut in the US remake of the British series For All Cases Fitz . However, the American version of the series was discontinued after a short time. In 1998 he stood for the first time for a movie in front of the camera. In Halloween: H20 he played the son of Jamie Lee Curtis . Other 'teen flicks' like The Faculty followed. In 1999 he also played the role of Trip Fontaine in Sofia Coppola's novel The Virgin Suicides .

It was not until 2001 that he had his big break. Josh Hartnett played the pilot Cpt on the side of Ben Affleck and Kate Beckinsale in the Second World War film Pearl Harbor by director Michael Bay and successful producer Jerry Bruckheimer . Danny Walker . This role earned him worldwide fame and cemented his reputation as a new star in the Hollywood sky. The commercially successful film was considered a failure from an artistic point of view, and Hartnett was nominated alongside Affleck together with Beckinsale for the Golden Raspberry for their portrayal as the "worst couple".

Other projects like Black Hawk Down and 40 Days and 40 Nights followed. Both films became box office hits, and Hartnett became a star especially through 40 days and 40 nights . In Black Hawk Down he also played a leading role alongside colleagues such as Ewan McGregor and Tom Sizemore . In addition, after September 11, 2001, the film, which deals with a US combat mission in Somalia in 1993, caused a sensation in the world press, as did its director Ridley Scott in the focus of attention. Hartnett's next film Hollywood Cops with Harrison Ford , however, was a flop due to the shaky, opaque story. Since then Hartnett has not had any major public successes.

After a 'creative break' Josh Hartnett shot several films in a row in 2004/2005, The Black Dahlia , Mozart and the Whale and Lucky Number Slevin . In Sin City , where u. a. A film about the jazz legend Chet Baker , The Prince of Cool , was planned, in which Hartnett would play the leading role. After differences of opinion with the producers regarding the ideas for the film, Hartnett left his heart project. As a big jazz fan, he would have loved to take on the role, but the rights holders didn't want to do “anything new” and the script was “too spectacular” in his opinion.

From August 28 to December 20, 2008 he was seen at the Apollo Theater in London in Rain Man in the role of Charlie Babbitt . According to his own admission, he had accepted the role because he “wanted to grow as an actor”. Hartnett's participation related to both print media and TV ads for the fragrance mentioned.

With his role in Der Börsen-Crash he took another step into the character field; He also worked for the film for the first time as a producer. a. Winning David Bowie and Rip Torn as contributors. In I Come With the Rain , Hartnett played a private detective looking for the missing son of a pharmaceutical entrepreneur. The film was made with an almost exclusively Asian cast.
