Mozart and the Whale is an American tragicomedy by Petter Næss from 2005. The film adaptation is based on the novel Crazy in Love (English original title: Mozart and the Whale ) by Jerry and Mary Newport , in which the two have their own lives - or reproduce the love story biographically.

action

Donald is a trained mathematician and works as a taxi driver. Isabelle is a musician and painter, she works in a hair salon. When Isabelle joins the self-help group founded by Donald and they carefully approach each other, the lives of the two opposing characters are completely mixed up and their relationship is put to a difficult test: the reluctant Donald hides his existence as Asperger's autist in public and prefers each other adapt more to society. Isabelle, on the other hand, is quite satisfied with her extroverted nature and her honesty (with which she often hurts others) and is looking for acceptance for her existence.

production

The screenplay was written by Ronald Bass, who previously wrote Rain Man , a drama that is also about an autistic personality. Bass is said to have drawn inspiration for the film from a 1995 newspaper article from the Los Angeles Times .

The film was originally a DreamWorks project and was to be directed by Steven Spielberg with Robin Williams and Téa Leoni in the leading roles. Spielberg was unable to realize the film in the time available because of other commitments.

criticism

"Sensitive outsider story in the form of a humorous melodramatic comedy, carried by excellent actors."

"Sensitively and warmly, Næss tells the story of a cautious and always difficult approach, as an unequal couple Josh Hartnett and Radha Mitchell give a heart-warming performance."
