Summary
The film describes the investigation of an unexplained disappearance of a youth on the ranch of Patriarch Scott Briggs by a Texas Rangers detective , Samantha Payne . In doing so, latent family conflicts are revealed.
action
A flashback shows how Ben Briggs and his friend Jimmy Davis talk in the semi-darkness of a barn about leaving their father's ranch and town in order to be able to live together undisturbed. Scott Briggs surprises both of them, whereupon Ben flees, then a shot is fired.
Fifteen years later, Samantha Payne is asked by Mrs. Davis, the missing boy's mother, to look for him again. Payne learns from a retired police officer that Jimmy was last seen and gone in and out of Scott Briggs' ranch. During her investigation, she later runs into danger when Riggs hires the corrupt Deputy Rogers to put Payne under pressure. He hires some criminal youth, one of whom shoots them. She is then embroiled in a chase and can kill the attacker. Shortly afterwards, the Rogers is arrested during a drug deal.
On the occasion of the filing of his will , Scott asked Briggs, his three sons and Maria Gonzales, a woman who was raised in the Briggs house, to accompany him to the lawyer. In addition, Ben, who left the ranch after the incident in the barn, comes back. He is now openly gay , but his father has not forgiven him so far. During the meeting, Scott reveals to his family that Maria is his daughter, whom he fathered with a housekeeper who was then employed .
After the meeting, the three brothers try to process the new information and go to a pub . You get into an argument with other guests who want to attack Ben because of his homosexuality . The brothers stick together and win the fight, in which Ben in particular excels as a trained thug and impresses his brothers. Samantha Payne is advised to interview Pedro Alvarez, a former Briggs employee. However, he has not had good experiences with Texas rangers and refuses to work with them. When Scott Briggs is looking for him later, he is again denied. Payne then visits Briggs and tells him in private that she suspects him of killing Jimmy and burying him on his ranch. Briggs doesn’t let that bother him, but he becomes increasingly nervous: when he meets his sons KC and Johnny, he starts an argument for no reason. He confesses to KC that they are “after him”.
When interviewed by Payne, Ben admits his relationship with Jimmy but does not reveal any details that could incriminate his father. Then Ben confronts his father. He urges him to put things in order in his life. Shortly afterwards he drives to Mrs. Davis with Ben and tells how the evening in the barn really went. Angry, Ben tells his father that he never wants to see him again and leaves him. On the way back, Scott has to park his car on the side of the road because he's not doing well. He dies and the family buries him on the ranch.
background
Although the action is set in Texas, the film was shot primarily in Utah.
criticism
“Drug wars, illegal immigrants, gays, family disputes, abuse of spouses, fathers and sons, fathers and daughters, sexism, racism, border wars, corrupt cops, Mexican street gangs: Duvall touches all of this with courteous courtesy. ("The drug war, illegal immigration, gay rights, family feuds, spousal abuse, fathers and sons, fathers and daughters, sexism, racism, border wars, corrupt cops, Mexican street gangs: Duvall gives them all the courtesy of a quick glance . ") "
“Inconsistent in tone and narrative without context: 'Wild Horses' consists of patchwork scenes that could also come from a much longer film or perhaps even a mini-series. ("Tonally dissonant and narratively disjointed," Wild Horses "plays like a patchwork quilt of scenes excerpted from a much longer movie, or maybe even a miniseries.") "
