Hugh Hilley , a native of Hugh Healey (born March 19, 1899 in Royston , Glasgow , † September 14, 1987 ) was a Scottish football player .

Career

Hugh Hilley was born in Royston , a district of Glasgow , in 1899 . During his childhood his Irish Catholic family changed their last name from Healey to Hilley in order to avoid any religious discrimination. He began his football career at FC St. Anthony’s, for which he played until 1921. On May 16, 1921, he signed a contract with Celtic Glasgow . The energetic left-back made his debut for the Hoops in a 0-0 draw against Third Lanark on March 4, 1922. For the following years he remained as a regular in this position with the Bhoys . In a league game on August 20, 1927 against Hamilton Academical , he left the field with a severe exhaustion , which led to a nervous breakdown . He never played for the Celtic first team again . With Celtic he won the Glasgow Cup twice in his career , once the Scottish Championship in the 1925/26 season and twice the Cup . Hilley played at Celtic throughout his career .

After finishing his career as a player, he opened an ice cream parlor and a restaurant with his wife of Italian descent .
