30 Days of Night is an American - New Zealand horror film released in 2007 . Directed by David Slade and written by Stuart Beattie , Brian Nelson and Steve Niles .

action

The film is set in the small, snowy town of Barrow , Alaska , a settlement across the Arctic Circle that is continuously dark for 30 days every year during winter. During this time, Barrow loses a significant number of residents who flee the polar night to more southerly parts of the country, while the remaining residents remain in the dark in the isolated village.

The city's sheriff, Eben Oleson, is investigating a number of mysterious acts of sabotage on the last day before the upcoming dark season, which includes satellite telephones and the city's only helicopter . All of the town's sled dogs are also brutally killed. Mrs. Stella, who has become more and more estranged from Eben, also wants to leave Barrow on the last plane, which is prevented by a traffic accident. She has to spend the 30 days in Barrow.

In the evening, a neglected stranger becomes conspicuous in a restaurant when he emphatically orders “fresh meat”. The sheriff who happens to be present takes the nerd into police custody when he turns against him. In the prison cell, the stranger - who turns out to be a collaborator of the vampire group in the further course of the plot - predicts the imminent death of the police couple as well as Eben's younger brother Jake and his grandmother Helen. Meanwhile, the city is attacked by the vampires in the dark and the first deaths occur. The goal of the beings is initially to paralyze telecommunications and power supply in order to finally cut off the settlement from the outside world, which is also successful. In the next phase the croaking creatures overrun the city - only their leader Marlow and a possibly infected girl can understandably articulate themselves - bloodthirstily and ruthlessly killing the majority of the inhabitants, including Eben's grandmother. The vampires have superhuman powers and cannot be stopped by firearms. However, they can be killed by chopping off their heads.

Together with a group of survivors, Eben and Stella hide in the hope of being able to hold out until the end of the darkness. In their search for food, the group comes across vampires again and again and is further decimated. It has just been noticed that the people who transform into vampires are still masters of their senses shortly before the transformation. Shortly before the end of the 30 nights, the vampires destroy a pipeline and set the city on fire with oil. They want the destruction of the city to look like an accident and, presumably, attack neighboring towns next year. In order to save his wife Stella and a child, Oleson infects himself with vampire blood to transform himself into a vampire so that he can fight Marlow with his own powers. The rescue succeeds too, Oleson kills Marlow, and the remaining vampires flee before daybreak. Oleson, who has already turned into a vampire but can still keep his bloodlust in check, watches the sunrise with his wife Stella. He crumbles to ashes in her arms.

Reviews

Megan Lehmann wrote in the journal The Hollywood Reporter of 18 October 2007, the film was " particularly bloodthirsty " ( " love especially gory "). The pictures would appear " confusing ".

Prairie Miller wrote on the WBAI Radio website on October 12, 2007 that the film was oddly funny. The pictures of the snow-covered dark streets would appear " quite impressive " artistically .

The film magazine Cinema rated the film as " hearty, humorless and quite superficial "; he has " nothing really new (...) to offer ".

The lexicon of the international film judges: “ The initially coherent, original and eerie vampire film runs out of staging air in the second half and it degenerates into conventional horror without surprises. After all, the atmospheric look continues until the showdown. "
