Bunraku is an American action film directed by Guy Moshe from the year 2010 with Josh Hartnett , Ron Perlman , Woody Harrelson , Gackt , Demi Moore and Kevin McKidd . The film title Bunraku describes a traditional form of Japanese puppet theater . The film is visually based on this form.

In an unspecified future, all firearms will be banned after a war. People fight each other with swords and fists.

A nameless stranger appears in a town ruled by gang boss Nicola and his killers. In the “Rider without Horse” saloon , he meets the bartender and Yoshi, who wants to fulfill his late father's last wish: to bring back an amulet that was stolen from his village. Nicolas right-hand man, killer number 2, kills Yoshi's uncle and kidnaps his cousin. Yoshi learns that Nicola has the stolen amulet. With the help of the shopkeepers suppressed by Nicolas killers, the nameless and Yoshi can penetrate Nicolas Burg. In one-on-one battles they can kill Killer No. 2 and Nicola. The nameless person reveals that this is the revenge on Nicola for killing his father.

Filming

The shooting took place in Romania in the summer of 2008 with a budget of 25 million US dollars . The film was shot within 12 weeks. The opening sequence was created by Brazilian filmmaker Guilherme Marcondes .

publication

Premiere Bunraku on 11 September 2010 at the Toronto International Film Festival . After screenings at various film festivals, the film was shown in the United States in September 2011 on a smaller scale in cinemas. In the German-speaking countries, the film was released directly on the home theater market in October 2011 .

The German-language dubbing was done by Splendid Sychnron based on a dialogue book by Hans-Jürgen Wolf , who also directed the dialogue .

Reviews

The Rotten Tomatoes platform received mostly negative reviews: only 4 out of 23 critics rate the film positively, which corresponds to a value of 17%. The film magazine Cinema criticized that the film was visually attractive but still flat. The LdiF assessed that the simple story would come up with excellent actors and captivate with its visual design. The film currently has 6.2 out of 10 points on the IMDb Internet platform (as of August 31, 2018).
