action

Motorcyclist Cary Ford returns to California to make up with his girlfriend Shane. A few months earlier, the speed fanatic had to leave for Thailand because he had made the machines of the unscrupulous dealer Henry James, leader of the "Hellions" disappear.

The film begins with a car race that takes place in the middle of the desert. The motorcyclist Cary Ford gets on the track and eventually overtakes the drivers. He then stops at a "diner" owned by his former girlfriend Shane. There is a picture on the wall showing Cary and Shane when they were still together. Cary takes the picture. As he leaves the '' diner '', the two drivers engage him in a fight that Ford wins. Afterward, Ford meets up with his friends Dalton and Val. They drive back into town for a motorcycle party. On the way there is an argument with a larger gang , the '' Reapers ''. She is led by Trey and his brother Junior. After a car chase, they confront Ford and tell him that if he doesn't stop stealing motorcycles from the gangs, they will kill him. They are disturbed by the police and the argument dissolves.

Ford visits Shane in her workshop at a biker party. You are disturbed by the '' Hellions ''. Henry James appears with his girlfriend China and his "right hand" Luther. Henry threatens Ford for stealing motorcycles with drugs hidden in them. Ford says he had to do this to pay bills and his own motorcycle.

Ford, his friends and Shane arrive at a nightclub , a meeting place for many rockers . There is a confrontation between the three gangs. Junior escapes and hides in the club's toilet. There are already Henry, China and Luther confronting Junior. Junior still owes Henry money from a drug deal. He asks Henry for patience in order to repay the money shortly. He cannot be changed and strangles Junior with a motorcycle chain . Meanwhile, Ford, Shane and his friends drive and spend the night in a motel . Ford and Shane talk for a long time and slowly approach each other again.

The crime scene is now being investigated by two FBI agents , Agent Henderson and her partner McPherson. You take over the case and want to find the murderer Juniors. China comes forward as a witness, saying that she saw Ford kill Junior. Trey hears about it and assigns his gang to find and kill Ford.

The next day, Ford and his gang drive to a restaurant. Shane sees on TV that Ford is wanted as a murderer. Shane reports to Ford and everyone flees the restaurant. Shortly afterwards, the '' Reapers '' come by and immediately chase after them. Ford drives into a palm forest where the gang separates. Ford drives out of the forest into the desert and follows a train there . He reaches the roof of the wagons via a ramp , Trey follows him. In the chase that follows, both of them drive in front of the train. Trey has an accident and is trapped between the rails and the motorcycle. Ford turns around and can free Trey in time, but Trey's machine is completely destroyed. Ford can explain to him by the passing train that he is innocent. Trey takes Ford's motorcycle and escapes. Shane later picks up Ford and the four meet again.

Ford calls FBI agent McPherson from a gas station and protests his innocence. He doesn't believe him, but Agent Henderson does. The four of them secretly push their motorcycles into a truck that is transporting a sports car . The agents arrive shortly afterwards. The next morning the police stopped the truck. When the four of them notice this, Ford and Shane rush the car off the back of the truck, while Val and Dalton drive their motorcycles. The FBI agents and Trey are following her. While driving, Ford switches to Val's bike and Val continues to drive with Shane in the car. During the chase, the agents build an accident and eventually land on the roof. Trey collides with Ford. Ford explains to Trey again at gunpoint that he is innocent of his brother's death. Trey believes him. Ford suspects that Henry wants to play the two against each other. He hands the motorcycles stolen by Henry over to Trey.

Ford escapes to Shane's workshop. There he calls his friends and asks them to come so they can discuss how to proceed with Trey. There they are arrested by the FBI agents and Henderson demands an explanation as to why Ford is innocent. McPherson says he shoots Henderson down for working for Henry and his gang. Henry, China and Luther arrive, they have captured Val, Dalton and Shane. Ford offers to return the motorcycles. Henry plans to kill Ford and Trey after admitting his guilt for Junior's death. There is a lengthy fight in the course of which Trey eventually kills Luther. Henry and China flee the workshop. Ford and Trey free the others and together they leave the workshop. Just before they succeed, Henderson gets up again and tells McPherson that she has a bulletproof vest. China meets Shane in front of the workshop, both fighting on their motorcycles. Shane eventually kills China when she kicks her off her motorcycle and flies her through the windshield of a car.

Ford and Henry chase each other on their motorcycles. Henry shoots on the trail of leaking gasoline, causing the fuel to ignite. Both drive faster and faster to avoid getting caught in the flames. Ford drives up a ramp, does a somersault, and lands on Henry's motorcycle. Braked by the accident, they are reached by the flames and an explosion occurs, in which Ford is thrown away and Henry dies. Shane picks him up and they return to the workshop. In the end, Shane and Ford are together again and the four of them go on vacation with Vall's friend Nina.

background

  • The original English title Torque means torque translated .
  • At the beginning of the film, Ford competes in two cars on his motorcycle. As he rushes past these, he passes a street sign, which then begins to turn. Instead of the long street names, only the letters in the middle can be seen, which form the words "cars suck" and mean something like "cars are shit". This is not only meant to refer to the two suspended cars, but also a reference to the films in The Fast and the Furious series, which were also produced by Neal H. Moritz .
  • Another allusion is also found at the beginning of the film during the chase, when the drivers first meet a red car and a few moments later an old truck. This scene is aimed at Steven Spielberg's film " Duel ".
  • In the original sound, Ford says the sentence "I live my life a quarter mile at a time", another allusion to The Fast and the Furious , since Vin Diesel used the exact same words there. In the German dubbing he says "I live for the next corner".
  • The original phrase "Fuck the Police" addressed by Ice Cube to the FBI agent is an allusion to the well-known title "Fuck tha Police" by his former hip-hop group NWA , which actually caused a reaction from the FBI due to provocative lines of text . In the German dubbing he says "Fuck the cops".
  • The director Joseph Kahn has a brief guest appearance: He can be seen as a passenger on the train.
  • The superbike shown is not an invention of the filmmakers: It is the " MTT Turbine Superbike " from Marine Turbine Technologies , which is powered by a gas turbine instead of the usual engines , which is usually used in helicopters .
  • The cost of production was estimated to be $ 40 million. The film grossed approximately $ 21.2 million in US cinemas and $ 46.5 million worldwide.
  • The film was shot entirely in California .
