Brian loses his car papers to Dominic Toretto in an illegal car race. When the car is subsequently destroyed by Dominic's rival Johnny Tran, Brian tries to win Dom's trust by helping to upgrade a Toyota Supra that he uses to pay off his debt to Dom. Meanwhile, he falls in love with Dom's younger sister Mia. Brian soon finds himself in a conflict between his professional obligation and the growing friendship with Dominic, while his superiors continue to pressure him to provide results for his investigations.
Brian realizes that Dominic and his gang are planning another robbery on a truck. He clears up Mia of his true identity and intentions and learns that the robbery is already underway. Brian convinces Mia to take him to the scene. There they learn that the attack failed and that Vince was seriously injured. Brian calls for a rescue helicopter, mentioning that he is a cop. Then Dominic disappears together with his team members. Dominic returns to his house in search of Jesse, who is on the run from Johnny Tran after losing a street race. Here he meets Brian, who wants to arrest him. The situation threatens to escalate when Jesse shows up and is shot down by Johnny shortly afterwards. Brian and Dominic then take up his pursuit. Johnny is killed by a bullet from Brian's gun during the chase.
Dominic then challenges Brian to a quarter mile race on his old racetrack, which he used in his youth. The race ends in a draw. However, after crossing the railroad track that serves as the finish line, Dom's car collides with a truck and overturns several times. Brian helps Dom out of the wrecked car and decides to let him escape. With the declaration that he still owes him a ten-second car, Brian gives Dominic the keys to the Toyota Supra. Dom drives off before the police arrive.

background
- The plot has parallels to the film Dangerous Surf with Keanu Reeves from 1991. Both films show an undercover cop infiltrating a group of extreme athletes in order to get information about a series of thefts.
- Spurred on by the great success of The Fast and The Furious , Electronic Arts changed its video game series Need for Speed from racing with sports cars and luxury cars to a series that puts a further focus on tuning the vehicles it contains, just like in The Fast and The Furious , so "underground" races.
- Working title for The Fast and the Furious was among other things "Race Wars".
