Staff and cast

In May 2018, Vin Diesel confirmed that Justin Lin , director of parts three through six, would re-direct Fast & Furious 9 and its sequel. The screenplay was written by Daniel Casey based on a plot by Lin and Alfredo Botello . Diesel and Samantha Vincent act as producers for One Race Films , Lin for Perfect Storm Entertainment and Jeffrey Kirschbaum and Joe Roth for Roth / Kirschbaum Films . Jordana Brewster is slated to return to the series after a film break. Michelle Rodríguez made her participation dependent on whether there would be more equality and more present female roles within the film series in the future. According to her statement, it is "pathetic" that she can count on one hand how often she was allowed to speak to her colleague Jordana Brewster on the screen in the entire row. Finally, in December 2018, the return of Rodríguez and Tyrese Gibson was announced. In doing so, Rodríguez managed to get a female screenwriter additionally engaged for the film, “who gives the story a female voice”. In addition, Dominic Toretto's child is said to have an appearance in the film. Gibson had previously stated, however, that he would only appear in the film if Dwayne Johnson was not there, but later rowed back. Even so, Johnson confirmed in late January 2019 that he would not be in the film.

Later, John Cena was hired as the first newcomer to the film as the antagonist and Dom's brother Jakob . Cena commented on his commitment that it was a great opportunity for him to work with such talented people, from whom he could still learn a lot. According to his own statement, he fits in very well with the franchise because he is also a “car guy”. After Fast & Furious 8 , Charlize Theron and Helen Mirren return to their roles again. Mirren said beforehand that she would like to be a part of the ninth film, as long as she could "get behind the wheel" herself. Finn Cole , Anna Sawai and Vinnie Bennett have also been announced as newcomers . As it became known in August 2019, the UFC professional Francis Ngannou is said to have an appearance in the film. Later could also Michael Rooker , Cardi B and Ozuna , who stood for the film only the second time in front of the camera, be required. With the release of the trailer, it was announced that Sung Kang , Lucas Black and Jason Tobin will return to their roles as Han Seoul-Oh , Sean Boswell and Earl . Bow Wow later announced that he would have another appearance after The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift .

Filming

Pre-production started in London in February 2019 . The first recordings should take place in April 2019 in Glasgow , where they had already shot for Fast & Furious: Hobbs & Shaw six months earlier , which means that the film crew is very familiar with the local locations and the workforce. Main filming began on June 24th at Warner Bros. Studios, Leavesden near London. On July 22, 2019, filming was interrupted for the whole day after stuntman Joe Watts from Second Unit fell from a ten-meter-high balcony due to a broken safety rope. As a result, he was flown with serious head injuries by rescue helicopter to a London hospital and put into a coma there . The next day, the main shooting continued while the second unit continued to pause. In early August 2019, Watts' family finally announced that his condition had improved and that he could leave the intensive care unit. On August 18, filming was relocated to Tbilisi , Georgia , where filming will take place in the city center and in a shopping center for up to a month. Among other things, scenes with a 2020 Toyota Supra were filmed there. Further recordings will take place in Edinburgh city center between 6 and 23 September 2019 . For this purpose , a production camp was set up in Holyrood Park near Holyrood Palace between September 4th and 13th. A total of 52 streets in the capital of Scotland were temporarily closed during filming, including the central shopping street George Street for a weekend and the Royal Mile . To avoid annoying background noise from street musicians, the production team paid around 40 artists $ 100 an hour to keep them away from filming. The film production, one of the largest ever to take place in Edinburgh, employed a total of 800 people, including 375 directly from the region. Parallel to the production in Scotland's capital, the film was shot again in London, where a Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat was used. Few scenes are also said to have been shot in Los Angeles and Thailand , including in the provinces of Krabi and Phuket and on the island of Ko Pha-ngan . Shooting was officially completed on November 11, 2019.

In August 2019, the filming of Cody Walker , the younger brother of the late Paul Walker , was attended.

In addition to the 2020 Toyota Supra and the Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat, other vehicles are featured in the film, including a 1968 Dodge Charger 500 , a Yamaha YZ 450 F , a 2018 Honda NSX , a 2020 Jeep Gladiator , a 2018 Noble M600 , a 1974 Chevrolet Nova SS , a Ford Mustang GT-350 and a Pontiac Fiero .

publication

A first teaser was published together with a film poster on January 28, 2020. The official trailer was presented three days later during a live concert in Miami that featured a live band as well as musicians Cardi B , Wiz Khalifa , Ozuna , Ludacris and Charlie Puth . On February 2, 2020, a heavily shortened, re-cut version of this trailer with a few new scenes was broadcast as part of Super Bowl LIV .

The cinema release was originally planned for May 2020, but was postponed to 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic . The cinema release in the USA is planned for April 2, 2021 and in Germany for the beginning of April 2021.
