action

Luke McNamara is studying law at Yale University with his girlfriend Chloe Whitfield and their friend Will Beckford. One day McNamara is invited by a phone call to join the Skulls secret society . The model for this secret society was the student union Skull & Bones , which is the subject of numerous conspiracy theories because of its mysterious customs and its links with the political and economic management level in the USA.

McNamara and a few other newbies pass a test of courage in which McNamara is mainly supported by Caleb Mandrake, the son of Litten Mandrake, the chairman of the Skulls . The students receive generous gifts, they are invited to parties where they are seduced by beautiful women who are paid for. The money for this comes from legacies of the former members, who have to bequeath a certain portion of their wealth to the Skulls . The young men are told: We live by the rules, we die by the rules .

Will Beckford works as a reporter for a newspaper. He steals the key to the Skulls quarters from Caleb Mandrake . There he is surprised by Caleb Mandrake, falls in the scuffle and loses consciousness. Caleb's summoned father, Litten Mandrake, sends his son away.

Initiation means that a future member and his partner spend several hours in a tight cage, where they can ask any question. McNamara and Caleb Mandrake are trapped together; McNamara asks Caleb about the circumstances surrounding Will's disappearance. Caleb believes he killed Will, but McNamara later finds a video tape from the surveillance camera showing that Will was still alive after the accident but was killed by Martin Lombard, the university's dean, on behalf of Litten Mandrake. He takes the tape to the police, but one of the secret society members erases the tape. McNamara becomes a suspect himself and flees. A member of the Skulls and partner of Litten Mandrake, Senator Ames Levritt supports him.

McNamara appears at a celebration of the Skulls and challenges Caleb Mandrake, according to the rules of the Skulls , to a duel . Neither boy shoots the other. Litten Mandrake reaches for a pistol and tries to shoot McNamara, but is shot by his own son. At the end you see the rehabilitated Luke together with Chloe.

Reviews

Peter Stack wrote in the San Francisco Chronicle on March 31, 2000 that the film was "unintentionally amusing." One shouldn't expect a lot of “intelligence” (“brainpower”) from him, except for the opening scene of a regatta he is “junk”. Nothing is credible, among other things the gigantic stylized rooms in the quarters of the Skulls are implausible. The representations, the script and the camera work are bad.

The lexicon of international film criticized the "inadequacies of the staging".

Awards

Joshua Jackson was nominated for a Teen Choice Award in 2000.
