action

At the beginning of the film, the main characters are briefly presented:

  • the frustrated writer Madelyne Thompson about to leave town
  • the spirited, self-confident Roy Nord, director of a sporting goods company, who is only interested in the success of his company, which he also advertises with commercials in which he participates
  • a high society couple who just want to take their dog for a ride
  • some prisoners whose prison transport is located at the time of the collapse in the tunnel
  • PAPD policeman George Tyrell, who is in love with a colleague
  • and the Crightons, a constantly arguing couple with a teenage daughter.

During the evening rush hour , hundreds of cars are on the move in New York's Holland Tunnel , which connects Manhattan and New Jersey under the Hudson River . Fleeing youthful jewel thieves encounter with a chemical transport truck - convoy together, what a catastrophe occurs. Huge explosions destroy dozens of vehicles, kill their occupants and threaten to bring down the tunnel roof. Parts of the tunnel are destroyed and collapse. Twelve survivors are trapped in tons of metal and concrete more than 30 meters below the Hudson and exposed to toxic smoke and fire. Kit Latura, the former head of civil protection, lets himself be smuggled down to them through a ventilation shaft without hesitation in order to take them outside. He only has a few hours to do this before the oxygen runs out.

Those trapped, however, only complain about their situation and argue about who should lead them; Kit Latura is accused of not getting her out of her situation quickly enough. Roy Nord, a know-it-all, wants to become the leader of the group and tries to find a way out on his own. He doesn't want to listen to Latura and his suggestions about what will ultimately cost him his life in a collapsing ventilation shaft.

Several of those trapped are killed in the course of the film. Time is of the essence, the walls begin to collapse, the air is running out and the tunnel fills more and more with water. To save them, the survivors have to dive through a flooded supply shaft in order to reach a higher level. Latura risks his life for the others and thus prevents further deaths. Literally at the last second, he succeeds in bringing the remaining survivors back to the surface through all the dangers via old maintenance tunnels.

Others

  • The film was estimated to cost $ 80 million and grossed $ 159 million worldwide. The Gage of Sylvester Stallone was 20 million dollars.
  • Director Rob Cohen makes a brief appearance; he plays one of the businessmen in the meeting led by Roy Nord.
  • Viggo Mortensen commuted between shooting Daylight and Portrait of a Lady .
  • Sylvester Stallone is clearly wearing a wristwatch from the Italian brand Officine Panerai in the film . This is the Luminor Logo model with the reference 5218/201-A. The Panerai brand, which was still relatively unknown at the time, has since grown in popularity. There are always Panerai models that have the lettering Daylight or SlyTech - after Stallone's nickname "Sly".

Reviews

  • Bernhard Lichtenberger wrote in the OÖN on February 7, 1997 : "Logic has little place in a Stallone flick, which is why we do not consider its recent absence in the tunnel drama 'Daylight' to be a serious crime." Director Rob Cohen has disasters - Blockbuster from the 1970s like Flammendes Inferno taken as a model, both in terms of the cliché coloring of the characters and the stretching of the tension.
  • The lexicon of international films judged: “The film listlessly varies the stereotypes of the disaster film. Even the figure drawing looks calculated and mechanical. "
