Officine Panerai is an Italian company in the luxury watch sector with headquarters in Milan and production in Neuchâtel ( Switzerland ). Panerai is part of the Richemont Group .
history
In 1860 Giovanni Panerai founded a watchmaking business on the Ponte alle Grazie in Florence , the management of which was taken over by his great grandson Guido Panerai in 1890 . This was followed by the move to Piazza San Giovanni and the renaming of Orologeria Svizzera to Officine Panerai and the development of numerous patents in the watch and optics sector .
In 1938, the Italian Navy commissioned the family business to design a diving watch with high demands on readability and reliability. Since Panerai did not have the necessary know-how, the watches were ordered from Rolex . Rolex equipped the watches with Cortébert hand-wound movements. Panerai then built its own dials with the luminous material “ Radiomir ” in a sandwich construction. Panerai Radiomir was easy to read thanks to the Radiomir luminous material, even under water and in poor lighting conditions. It was worn exclusively by the Italian combat swimmer troop "Gamma" and was subject to military secrecy for a long time. A total of 2000 pieces are said to have been produced.
From 1950 the radiologically questionable Radiomir was replaced by Luminor . The name of the clock has also been changed accordingly. In addition, the watch case received the half-moon bow characteristic of Panerai watches to protect the crown.
In 1993, 1000 pieces of this watch were produced as Luminor and Luminor Marina for free sale and soon developed into a luxury item.
Panerai is now a luxury watch brand that is located in the high-priced segment. Panerai has been part of the Richemont Group since 1997 .
Trivia
The actor Sylvester Stallone wears a wristwatch from the Italian brand Officine Panerai at his own request in the film Daylight . This is the “Luminor Logo” model with the reference 5218/201-A. It is thanks to Sylvester Stallone that the then still quite unknown brand Panerai has since gained popularity and triggered a real boom on diving watches from Florence, especially in Hollywood. Since then there have been Panerai models in his honor that bear the words “Daylight” or “SlyTech” ( Sly is Stallone's nickname). In part 4 of the Rambo series , Sylvester Stallone again wears a Panerai (Marina Militare).
In the film Eraser , a Luminor Marina can be seen briefly in the opening credits, which apparently belongs to Marshal John Kruger ( Arnold Schwarzenegger ).
Also a Luminor Marina could be seen on the wrist of DMX as Latrell Walker in the film Exit Wounds - Die Copjäger .
In the movie The Expendables , Sylvester Stallone wears a Panerai Luminor Regatta in his role as Barney Ross.
Jason Statham wears a Luminor Daylight in the 2005 movie Transporter - The Mission .
In the series Castle (episode 6.20: Time travel to the seventies ) Panerai is mentioned when a Mafia boss is found murdered. It was precisely this mafia boss, Castle mentioned, who had a weakness for Panerai watches.

Officine Panerai mainly uses Swiss movements from the company ETA , which are made more attractive with sunbursts, modified bridges and other decorations and, after fine adjustment, receive a chronometer certification. Panerai now produces much more of its own movements, for example the automatic movements 9000, 9001 and 9002. In 2010, the P.999 caliber with manual winding was introduced.
In the meantime there are replicas from Asia under the name "Marina Militare", which are equipped with a clockwork identical to the Eta Unitas, called Asia Unitas. These watches are officially available.
