action

The film follows the life of Bruce Lee, told from the perspective of his wife Linda Lee.

When Bruce Lee's father dreams that he is haunted by evil demons, he sends his son to a Kung Fu school. When Bruce accidentally seriously injures an English marine, his father sends him to the United States. Here Bruce begins to work and meets Linda, who later becomes his wife. Linda convinces Bruce to open his own Kung Fu school. Bruce is discovered during a martial arts demonstration for television and plays one of the lead roles on the Green Hornet series . The series is discontinued after a season and after he is passed over in the cast for the new series Kung Fu , he goes to Hong Kong and becomes the new superstar in Asia with three martial arts films .

During the early filming of Game of Death , Warner Brothers approached Bruce Lee with an offer for an international cinema production: Enter the Dragon . Bruce Lee hopes with this film to establish himself as a successful film star on the American market. In the end, he dies under mysterious circumstances during the post-production of Enter the Dragon and the preparations for the continuation of the filming of the film Game of Death , even before Enter the Dragon hits with an incredible success and makes him an international superstar.

background

  • The film is based, among other things, on a biography of Bruce Lee, which was written by his wife Linda Lee Cadwell. The work is entitled Bruce Lee: The Man Only I Knew .
  • The film is dedicated to Bruce Lee's son Brandon Lee , who died that same year while filming The Crow .
  • Dragon - The Bruce Lee Story grossed $ 63,513,743 at the box office worldwide.

Truth and fiction

Since the film is more of a Hollywood drama than an authentic biography film, it contains many untruths, some of which differ greatly from reality.

  • Lee began practicing Wing Chun at the age of 13 after being beaten up in a street fight, not because of internal demons.
  • Lee's first student in the United States was named Jesse Glover, and the two had contact from 1959 to 1962. Bruce and Linda met in 1963. In the film, Glover is called Jerome Sprout and meets Lee in 1963 or '64, when he is already dating Linda.
  • While filming The Green Hornet , lead actor Van Williams was very supportive of his non-white co-star, but he fell on deaf ears with producers. In the film, his behavior towards Lee is portrayed rather hostile.
  • Wong Jack Man did not kick Lee in the back while he was walking away from the fight site. The fight took place in early 1965. But in Lee's own school, and not in a kind of temple as shown in the film. According to the film, Wong's kick in Lee's back was responsible for his back injury. In reality, Lee caught a sacral nerve in his back while doing weight training in August 1970 . Wong's name in the film is Johnny Sun .
  • There was never a second fight between Wong and Lee. Furthermore, the fight between Wong's brother and Lee on the set of Bruce Lee - The Death Fist of Cheng Li is also fictitious.
  • The book "The Tao of Jeet Kune Do" , German title "Bruce Lee's Jeet Kune Do" , was only published after Lee's death. In the film, the release is during his life.
  • Lee died six days before Enter the Dragon ( Enter the Dragon had) Premiere. At the end of the film, it says he died three weeks earlier.
  • Lee's death was never clearly clarified, but there was plenty of information. According to the film, he fell into a "mysterious coma," the cause of which is said to be unknown.

Awards

Jason Scott Lee received in 1994 a nomination for the MTV Movie Award in the category Best Breakthrough Performance .

The German Film and Media Evaluation FBW in Wiesbaden awarded the film the title valuable.

Reviews

“Interested in producing an American legend, the film remains imprecise in the star's Asian-cultural roots. Some brilliantly presented fights arouse interest. "

“Everything is right about this film, but we don't learn much about Bruce Lee. Because Cohen only made a magical fairy tale of karate and patriotism. "
