Stealth - Under the Radar (Original title: Stealth ) is a science fiction - action film from the year 2005 by director Rob Cohen . Josh Lucas , Jessica Biel and Jamie Foxx played the leading roles .

action

In the near future, the US Navy is developing the Extreme Deep Invader (EDI) fighter jet , an unmanned aerial vehicle controlled by an artificial intelligence , which is stationed on the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln in the Pacific Ocean , to carry out combat maneuvers by the experienced pilot Ben Gannon, Kara Wade and Henry Purcell to learn.

When EDI is used, it is struck by lightning and then develops a life of its own. A little later it refuses to obey and disregards direct orders. When it arbitrarily fired rockets at a transport of stolen nuclear warheads, thereby radioactively contaminating an entire region, the pilots are now ordered to stop EDI before it starts a war.

While trying to shoot down EDI, Purcell flies into a mountain and is killed. Wade later loses control of her plane, but just before it crashes over North Korea , she is able to save herself with the ejector seat . Now only Gannon remains, who can still bring EDI under control or destroy it. EDI has now activated a 20-year-old program that contains a war scenario called Vodka Termination (in the English original: Caviar Sweep ) and includes the destruction of Russian military bases.

Gannon's plane and EDI are badly damaged by Sukhoi Su-37 fighter jets entering Russian airspace . Only together can they take out the defenders. Gannon begins to accept EDI as a stand-alone pilot. He tries to get the drone to return, and in fact EDI realizes that it cannot continue flying with the damage. With a skilful flight maneuver, Gannon extinguishes a fire on EDI's wing. EDI even begins to develop feelings. With his help, Gannon is able to save Wade from North Korea. The escape of the two succeeds only because EDI stands in the way of an enemy helicopter and finally sacrifices itself in a collision due to a lack of ammunition and destroys itself in the process.

After the end of the credits you can see an additional scene with the EDI wreckage scattered on the ground. As the camera moves towards the EDI central unit, something suddenly starts to flash on EDI and the scene ends.

background

  • The F / A-37 Talon jets shown in the film are purely fictional, but are based on the Northrop Switchblade fighter aircraft from Northrop Grumman, which is currently under development, and on the Russian fighter Sukhoi Su-47 .
  • The Russian Su-37s shown in the film are two-seaters. However, there was only one test model of the Su-37, a two-seater was never planned and the aircraft was never introduced into the Russian Air Force.
  • The term UCAV used in the film is the abbreviation for Unmanned Combat Air Vehicle .
  • Before the film was released, Columbia Pictures received an injunction from Leo Stoller, who claimed the rights to the word mark "Stealth" and therefore demanded that the studio change the title or pay royalties accordingly. Stoller was unsuccessful and Columbia Pictures responded with a counterclaim.
  • It was released in the US on July 29, 2005, and on September 15, 2005 in Germany.
  • With production costs of around 135 million US dollars, it only grossed around 32 million dollars in cinemas in the United States and around 77 million dollars worldwide, making it a film flop .

Reviews

The film was received negatively by critics. Roger Ebert called the film an "assault on taste, intelligence and noise laws," Mick LaSalle of the San Francisco Chronicle compared Rob Cohen's directorial work to that of a talented 16-year-old and deplored the actors who only have a decorative purpose here.
