The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey Police Department (also Port Authority Police Department , PAPD) is a police unit that operates in the US states of New York and New Jersey . It is based in Jersey City , New Jersey.

history

The Police Department was established in June 1928 when 40 men were recruited to monitor and control the Goethals Bridge and the Outerbridge Crossing (then known as the Arthur Kill Bridge). These policemen were also called "Bridgemen", the sergeants were called "Bridgemaster".

The number of police forces grew with the opening of the Holland Tunnel , with the three Metropolitan Airports and a seaport (now the Elizabeth-Port Authority Marine Terminal). In the 1950s, the Port Authority was also responsible for the bus station and the Hudson and Manhattan subway stations (also known as the Port Authority Trans-Hudson System).

activities

The task is to protect the facilities of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey . These include the subway system in both states ( Port Authority Trans-Hudson ), the Port Authority Bus Terminal , the major airports and the World Trade Center site . The PAPD is one of the highest-paid police forces in the United States and one of the highest-paid on the east coast of the United States . When planes flew into the twin towers of the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001 and they later collapsed, the PAPD lost 37 officers and a police dog. Like the New York Police Department ( NYPD ), the PAPD also has a so-called ESU (Emergency Service Unit) , which helps with particularly difficult missions such as building collapses. The PAPD is not only a police unit, but also acts as a fire brigade (e.g. at the airport).

vehicles

The vehicles are almost completely white, but they are adorned with reflective blue stripes, various lettering and the PAPD emblem. There are smaller rotating beacons on the roof in the colors white and red.
