Peter Franklin Kurland (* 1958 in Nashville , Tennessee ) is an American sound engineer .

Life

Peter Franklin Kurland grew up in Nashville, Tennessee as the son of the musician Sheldon Kurland (1928-2010) and his wife Barbara. He attended Antioch College, where he was initially enrolled in theater, but graduated in business administration in 1981 . He also met his future wife Sharon there. During his time there he was with the campus fire department. This later earned him a job as "Fire Chief" (high rank in the American fire service).

It was more by chance that his career as a sound engineer began in 1984. He worked on a small television film because his father gave him a basic knowledge of sound engineering. He then met the brothers Ethan and Joel Coen and was allowed to participate in their first film Blood Simple - A murderous night . There he was a sound assistant . Since then he has been involved in every film by the Coen brothers, either as a sound assistant or as a sound mixer. That makes him the only person besides the two directors who was involved in all of the Coen films. He also worked on other productions such as Men in Black and the two Addams Family films . In addition to working on the sound, he's also with the union , checking working conditions on Tennessee film sets.

In 1999 he tried his hand at film production for the first time . His film Existo received the Tennessee Independent Spirit Award from the Nashville Film Festival .

Kurland was nominated for an Oscar four times . For one, he was nominated for best sound three times along with the other three regular members of the Coen sound team Skip Lievsay , Greg Orloff and Craig Berkey : for No Country for Old Men ( 2008 Academy Awards ), True Grit ( 2011 Academy Awards ) and Inside Llewyn Davis ( Academy Awards 2014 ). On the other hand, he was nominated for their work on Walk the Line in the same category at the 2006 Academy Awards, along with Paul Massey and Doug Hemphill . For the latter he won a BAFTA award . He won a CAS Award from the Cinema Audio Society for Walk the Line , No Country for Old Man and True Grit . He also won two Grammy Awards at the 2002 Grammy Awards for the O Brother soundtrack , Where Art Thou? - A Mississippi odyssey .

Together with his wife, he has directed the Darkhorse Theater in Nashville for more than two decades.
