Alexander "Alex" Medawar Garland (born May 26, 1970 in London ) is a British writer , screenwriter and director .

Life

Garland was born in London to a psychoanalyst and a cartoonist. He studied art history at the University of Manchester and received his bachelor's degree in 1992 .

In 1996 Garland's debut novel The Beach was published , which soon became a bestseller. In 1998 Garland published his second novel Manila (English: The Tesseract ). Both novels were subsequently made into films: In 2000, the director Danny Boyle adapted Garland's debut with Leonardo DiCaprio in the lead role. The Tesseract followed in 2003 by the Thai director Oxide Pang Chun with Jonathan Rhys Meyers . 2004 appeared with Das Koma Garland's third novel, for which his father Nicholas Garland made the illustrations.

2002 Garland wrote for Danny Boyle the screenplay for the end time - horror film 28 Days Later , in which he also as executive producer acted and wrote the screenplay of the science-fiction film Sunshine , filmed the Boyle of 2007. He also wrote the script for the 2010 literary film All We Had to Give , an adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguro 's novel of the same name , and based on the Judge Dredd comics, the script for the 2012 action film Dredd .

For the video game Enslaved: Odyssey to the West (2010) Garland provided the plot and was involved in 2013 as a "story supervisor" in the game DmC: Devil May Cry .

In 2015 Garland made his directorial debut with the science fiction film Ex Machina , for which he also wrote the script himself. In 2018 he filmed the novel Annihilation by Jeff VanderMeer , with whom he also wrote the script together. The film was distributed worldwide by Netflix . The mini-series Devs followed in 2020 . Its chief cameraman is Rob Hardy .

Garland is married to actress Paloma Baeza .
