Jeff VanderMeer
Jeff VanderMeer (born July 7, 1968 in Pennsylvania ) is an American author of fantastic stories.
Life
He spent his childhood in the Fiji Islands with his parents who worked for the Peace Corps . He studied journalism, then English and finally Latin American history at the University of Florida , but did not complete his studies. In 1992 he was a participant in the renowned Clarion workshop for budding science fiction and fantasy authors, where he subsequently also worked as a lecturer. He later published educational articles on creative writing in the student magazine Merlin's Pen . VanderMeer is a founding member of the Council for Literature of the Fantastic at the University of Rhode Island .
He calls his works magical realism , and in fact they refer to the works of Jorge Luis Borges , Angela Carter and Vladimir Nabokov , among others . VanderMeer also plays and ties in with authors who are very exotic for today's Anglo-American world, such as Alfred Kubin and Fritz von Herzmanovsky-Orlando . In particular with his short stories, collected in City of Saints and Madmen , VanderMeer is considered an important representative of slipstream literature in science fiction.
In addition to his work as a writer, he works as a lecturer for various publishers and publishes anthologies.
In 2018, the novel Annihilation was made into a film by Alex Garland , who also wrote the screenplay with VanderMeer. The film was distributed worldwide by Netflix .
