Angela Carter

Angela Carter (born May 7, 1940 in Eastbourne , England , † February 16, 1992 in London ; born Angela Olive Stalker ) was a British writer .

Life

Angela Carter initially worked as a local journalist . In 1969 she received the Somerset Maugham Award . As a result, she traveled extensively and lived in Tokyo for two years . Carter wrote novels , short stories , fairy tales , nonfiction and children's books . She also published articles in well-known newspapers. Two of her books were made into films.

In The Sadeian Woman: An Exercise in Cultural History ( Sexuality is Power ), Carter examines the relationship between sexuality and power . Here she goes into the story of O and the works of the Marquis de Sade . While she rejects the former, what she values ​​about de Sade's works is that they place sexuality in a political context and very explicitly depict the existence of female dominance .

Angela Carter died in 1992 at the age of 51 years to cancer .

reception

She won the John Llewellyn Rhys Prize in 1969 with The Magic Toyshop , the Somerset Maugham Prize with Several Perceptions in 1968 and the 1979 Cheltenham Festival Literary Prize with The Bloody Chamber . Especially with Nights at the Circus and her short stories, collected in Burning Your Boats , Carter is an important representative of the slipstream literature.

The Australian band Jack Frost released a song called Angela Carter on the album Snow Job in 1996 .
