The Company of Wolves is an English fantasy film by Neil Jordan from the year 1984 . The film is based on two short stories from Bluebeard's room by British author Angela Carter .
action
Thirteen-year-old Rosaleen lies in her bed and dreams of a fairy tale world inhabited by wolves . Her grandmother tells her eerie stories about the (were) wolf in man. One day, in a dream, Rosaleen meets a hunter . This dream is the reflection of their fears, desires, self-actualization and sexual needs.
Remarks
Angela Carter used the Little Red Riding Hood fairy tale as a template for her short stories The Werewolf and The Society of Wolves , on which the film is based. This film goes beyond that. The Time of the Wolves is not your typical horror film with werewolves , but a Freudian version of this fairy tale for adults.
criticism
- Kay Less : The film's great personal dictionary . Volume 4, Berlin 2001, p. 252: Originating from a short story by the feminist Angela Carter, who was also involved in the script, the picture-puzzle-like fantasy product presented itself as a Little Red Riding Hood adept: "The time of the wolves" was on the one hand an allegorical nested fairy tale product in horror garb, spiced with breathtaking special effects. Freudian undertones and erotic allusions to an awakening female sexuality and self-determination, the little girl's struggle for her own innocence and against a monster that takes on many forms (= male temptation) as well as Angela Carter's decoupling epilogue ("And the morality of history" 'Girls don't give up' on the way… They are attracted by their beauty, and every man is a wolf… ”) on the other hand, they could also be interpreted as a cloaked emancipation story, linked to a feminist message of salvation.
- film-dienst : A fantastic puzzle game that plays in a sophisticated way with set pieces from horror films and the allegorical depths of old fairy tales and, with its wealth of details, encourages fabulous stories and further thinking.
Awards

The film won the Fantasporto Grand Prize for Best Film in 1985 and was also awarded the Audience Jury Prize, the Critics Prize, and the Best Special Effects Prize.
