High Spirits (Alternative title: High Spirits - Spirits are willing! ) Is a British - American comedy film of Neil Jordan from the year 1988 .

action

Peter is the last heir to the Plunkett family who own an old castle in Ireland. But this doesn't work at all and that's why Peter owes an American investor a lot of money. In order to save Plunkett Castle, Peter comes up with an idea: he turns it into a ghost castle for tourists. He is actively supported by his friends and employees. In fact, the new concept lures a group of tourists: Miranda, a disappointed young woman, the young priest Tony, a parapsychologist and family, and the married couple Sharon and Jack Crawford. The staff at Schloss Plunkett try everything to give tourists the creeps, but fail miserably. This calls the real ghosts of the castle onto the scene. They manage to keep the tourists from leaving.

Jack Crawford had hoped the trip would bring him closer to his brittle wife, Sharon. But when he finds out that she should only clarify the situation in Ireland for her father - the American investor - Jack gets disappointed and meets Mary Plunkett and her husband Martin Brogan. He witnesses how Martin tries to stab Mary and prevents it. Only later does he find out that the two are ghosts who have been repeating this every night for centuries. Mary takes advantage of the calm in front of her murderous husband and falls in love with Jack. Meanwhile, Martin approaches Sharon.

Jack learns from Peter's mother that he can free Mary. To do this, he has to be able to spend Halloween night with her without "making lace" with her. Despite all warnings, they succumb to their instincts and Jack has to watch as Mary decays before his eyes. It almost crumbles to dust and begs Jack to kiss her again. When he can finally overcome himself, Mary is freed. At the same time, Sharon falls from the castle tower. She becomes a ghost and begins a happy existence with Martin.

In the end, all the other tourists leave the castle happily. Miranda and Tony have fallen in love, and the parapsychologist has gathered so much evidence of ghost activity that he promises to recommend the castle as haunted . This saved Plunkett Castle.

Reviews

Rita Kempley wrote in the Washington Post on November 19, 1988 that the “ weird ” comedy looked like an afterlife. It is an " imposed " sex farce, low-tempo and bad. The portrayal of Peter O'Toole is " boring ", the supporting actors would seem " paralyzed ".

The magazine prisma wrote that the film was a " funny ghost comedy with good tricks and convincing actors ". The game was particularly praised by Peter O'Toole, who " obviously had a lot of fun " during the shooting .

The lexicon of international films describes the film as “ a hilarious, sometimes annoying comedy that relies on cheap effects and stale jokes. The desired 'duel' between the Irish and the American way of life is sinking into a bombastic special effects orgy with which the already listless actors can never keep up. "

The TV feature film calls the film "a dignified joke by Neil Jordan ". But she criticizes that the joke rarely ignites.

Awards

Daryl Hannah was nominated for the Golden Raspberry in 1989.

background

The film was shot at Dromore Castle, Townland Dromore, County Limerick , Ireland . It grossed approximately $ 8.6 million in American cinemas .
