Rhysling Award

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Rhysling Award is an annual prize for poetry from the genres of science fiction , fantasy and horror .

It was first awarded in 1978. The members of the Science Fiction Poetry Association (SFPA) each nominate a short poem ( short poem ) and a long poem ( long poem ; at least 50 verses). The nominated poems will then be collected in The Rhysling Anthology and members will vote on the winners in both categories. If there is a tie, multiple awards can be made. To be nominated, a poem must have been published in the past year. In addition, in a few years authors were honored as grand master poets for their life's work . The award has been presented since 2005 at the Readercon in Burlington , Massachusetts , in July .

The name of the award refers to the fictional poet Rhysling in Robert A. Heinlein's short story The Green Hills of the Earth .

For very short poems of up to 10 verses, the SFPA has given the Dwarf Stars Award since 2006 .
