John Milo "Mike" Ford (* 10. April 1957 in East Chicago , Indiana ; † 25. September 2006 in Minneapolis , Minnesota ) was an American science fiction - and fantasy - writer , poet and game designer .

Life

John M. Ford grew up in Whiting , Indiana and attended Indiana University Bloomington in the 1970s , where he was a member of the local SF Club and served with the Society for Creative Anachronism (as Miles Atherton de Gray). He left the university and moved to New York in 1978 because he could work there for the newly founded Isaac Asimov's Science Fiction Magazine . In addition to other short stories, he published countless articles and poetry there before he went to Minneapolis in 1990.

As early as 1975, Ford published a few short stories in the magazines Analog , Omni and Asimov's Science Fiction . The first novel Web Of Angels was an early example of cyberpunk , while The Princes Of The Air is a space opera was and The Dragon Waiting a fantasy - alternate history , the 1984 World Fantasy Award won. He received this again in 1989 for the short story Winter Solstice, Camelot Station . Ford received the Philip K. Dick Award a decade later for Growing Up Weightless . In his two novels from the Star Trek world, he gave the Klingons a different role than that of the dumb villains of the first television series and thus created the basis for their role in later series; later he wrote various additional texts for Star Trek role-playing games in which he deals with the Klingons. He drew maps for novels from the cycle The Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan .

In addition to his novels , he wrote other books with GURPS role- playing games and took part in the Liavek Shared World project . He won the Origins Award for the best RPG material three times. In 1998 he won the Rhysling Award for poetry . Some children's books were published by him under a pseudonym that was never known.

John M. Ford suffered from severe diabetes and kidney failure as a result, from childhood . In 2000, after years of dialysis , his life was significantly improved by a kidney transplant , before he was found dead at his desk on September 25, 2006 by his long-time partner.
