Philip K. Dick Award
The Philip K. Dick Award is an American literary award for contemporary science fiction literature. After the Hugo Award and the Nebula Award, it is one of the most important science fiction prizes.
The award was launched by Thomas M. Disch at the Northwest Regional Science Fiction & Fantasy Convention (Norwescon) in 1982 in memory of Philip K. Dick , who passed away that same year. It is awarded with the support of the Philip K. Dick Trust for distinguished science fiction published in paperback original form in the United States and funded by the Philadelphia Science Fiction Society (PSFS). It was administered in the first few years by Thomas M. Disch and then by Algis Budrys . He was followed by David G. Hartwell , who shared the task with Gordon Van Gelder .
Five judges decide on a shortlist, which is published in January. From this they will later choose the winner, who will be announced at the Norwescon at the end of March or beginning of April. They then choose their successors. Only writers and scientists are admitted.
The prize has been awarded annually at Norwescon since 1983. The award goes to the best science fiction publication of the previous year, which was first published in the USA as a paperback. Simultaneous publications as a bound edition will not be allowed in the selection. As a result, the winners rarely match other science fiction prizes.
One reason for the restriction to paperback books is that the works of the namesake of this award, Philip K. Dick, were mostly first published as paperbacks. Furthermore, the distribution of paperbacks is to be promoted.
In addition to the winner, the judges will select a work from the list of nominees that will receive a special mention. For the years 1988, 1993 and 2008 there were two winners and no special mention.
This is followed by the works and authors honored with the Philip K. Dick Award and with a special mention, as well as the other nominees. The year information relates to the year of publication and not to the year of the award ceremony.
