David R. Bunch

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

David Roosevelt Bunch (born August 7, 1925 in Lowry City , Missouri , † May 29, 2000 in St. Louis ) was an American science fiction writer.

Life

Bunch did military service in the US Air Force from 1942 to 1945 and studied at Washington University in St. Louis , graduating in 1949 and receiving his doctorate in 1952 from the University of Iowa . He worked as a civil cartographer for the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency for a long time before becoming a freelance writer in 1973.

He published his first science fiction story Routine Emergency in 1957, after he had already published more than 200 poems and stories. Two of his surreal moderan short stories were featured in Harlan Ellison's seminal anthology Dangerous Visions and established Bunch's reputation as one of the major voices of the New Wave . The collection of the often very short Moderan texts, published in 1971, can also be read as a dystopian episode novel that deals with a future dominated by cyborgs , in which human characteristics have become rare because people are getting rid of their flesh more and more. The allegorical, often ingenious, vignettes anticipated some of the motives and ideas of cyberpunk and received great praise from the critics, but often exceeded the understanding of the readership. Michael K. Iwoleit counts David R. Bunch as one of those idiosyncratic and brilliant authors who have never received the recognition they deserve, such as Avram Davidson , RA Lafferty or Barrington J. Bayley . A 1993 Science Fiction Studies poll looked for the most significant unjustly forgotten authors and books; Moderan was one of the two most popular titles. For Brian W. Aldiss , Moderan was "a unique book in the field of science fiction".

David R. Bunch has received several awards for his poetry.

He died in a nursing home at the age of 74 after multiple strokes.
